The Car Man by Matthew Bourne's New Adventures

Following our last two successful outings to see Matthew Bourne's innovative dance productions,  I am delighted to organise another trip to Sadler's Wells to see Matthew Bourne's award winning The Car Man.

'Loosely based on Bizet’s ever-popular opera (Carmen),  The Car Man has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertoire.

The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.

Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling combines with one of the most passionately dramatic scores ever written, with music by Terry Davies featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen), to create a dance thriller like no other.

The Car Man will ignite your senses and leave you breathless.'

Tickets from £15, to book, please click here.  At the moment, good availability for £15 seats, but I would advise book early as cheap seats are the first to go.

Pre-show F&B will be at The Wilmington, 69 Rosebery Ave, EC1R 4RL,  a gastro pub near the theatre from 5:30pm.

To assist easy co-ordination on the day,  there will be a Whatsapp group setup for the event.  If you wish to join the group,  please email your mobile number and your name to swcsocialATgmailDOT.com.  Note: I will not respond to request for personalised email communications for this event.

Note: you need to set your Whatsapp privacy setting to give me the permission to add you to the group.  I had a couple of incidences that I was unable to add people to the group.  My invitation did not reach the recipient either.

A couple of walkers defected to Carlisle, while another was stranded at home thanks to a fire at Jubilee line. That left four of us to gather at The Wilmington for some pre-show food and drinks.

Sadly, this is no longer quite the gastro pub it once was. The more adventurous main courses was on the menu but conveniently unavailable, leaving fish and chips, cheeseburgers and similar staples. Fortunately, the good company more than made up for the culinary let-down.

We met up with another walker during the interval, which led to plenty of lively discussion. The first half was a little slow for my taste, but it set the scene beautifully for a dramatic second half and a powerful ending. The performance was entertaining throughout, with plenty of humour, visually dazzling staging, and technically and physically demanding dance sequences, all brought together by Bizet’s passionate score. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Here are some thoughts from our very own critics.

“A highly energetic, deeply moving, and often very funny reimagining of Carmen. My personal highlights included the shower scene in Act One and the drag race in Act 2, which felt straight out of Rebel Without a Cause or American Graffiti. Above all, it was a joy to watch the cast move with such effortless weightlessness, whether in the work, love, or fight scenes, bringing the characters and their relationships vividly to life.”

“My only criticism, and not such a minor one, is that Dino's did not serve any food. With the grand neon signage, a la Tracey Emin, I had great expectations of more double cheese burgers appearing.”

“Beautiful and quite erotic choreography accompanied the music perfectly and it was so good to see and hear a racy version in which the Carmen archetype survives.”

P.S. Sorry we missed you, Hayley. We hope this wasn’t enough to put you off joining us for future cultural outings. N=6.
