This is a varied walk across heathland and wooded hills. It can be shortcut in various ways by turning south before Box Hill. I would like to check out the re-opened former The Tree, now the Chalk Hare on Box Hill for lunch. I made a booking for 4 for 13:15.

Given this is not a late start, I will not be aiming for an earlier train.

8 walkers met at the station. 3 of them did the shortcut, 1 did the White Hill extension. 5 finally reunited at the pub where another walker was found who took the train an hour later and walked the shortcut (#9). The food in the Chalk Hare, a dual menu of standard pub grub and a large Indian menu, was found to be generally very enjoyable and the service friendly and prompt. The pub was surprisingly empty, though. 3 walkers left the pub early for evening engagements or to catch a flight. The remaining 3 had a pleasant walk to Walton where 2 enjoyed a tea and cake at the Village Cafe before joining the 3rd and a walker who didn't stop at the Chalk Hare at the Bell pub where several rounds of drinks were consumed in the charming garden in the woods. 18:19 train home. It was #hot but the long sections of woodland paths on this walk provided pleasant shade. The heather on Headley heath seems to have gone, we only saw few signs of purple.
