Guildford Circular via Chantry Wood

Extra Walk 185c – Guildford Circular via Chantry Wood (short walk)

Length: 10½ km (6½ miles). Toughness: 3/10

11:00 Portsmouth Harbour train from Waterloo, arriving Guildford at 11:32. From Clapham Jct you'll need to take the 10:53 Portsmouth & Southsea train, arriving Guildford a few minutes earlier at 11:26.

There are three fast trains back from Guildford every hour, at (roughly) xx:19, xx:35 & xx:49 in the afternoon.

It's been suggested that we could try a few short winter walks with no more than an alfresco pit stop in the middle but a choice of refreshment places at the end. It will be easier for the group to stay together and if it finishes at around 2pm you can choose whether to have a late lunch or an early tea, hit the shops or simply head for the station.

This particular short walk is similar to one of our popular summer evening walks: a steep climb (on a new route) up to Pewley Down, an undulating descent via Chantry Wood and a final leg alongside the Wey Navigation. There's the option of a more direct ending into Guildford; conversely you could easily tack on a 1½ km out-and-back extension up to St Martha-on-the-Hill. At the end of the walk in §Q note that the alternative ‘River route’ is still likely to be stymied by a missing footbridge, but the ‘Town route’ will take you past a wide choice of refreshment places on the High Street.

You'll need to bring the directions from the L=swc.185.c page. You can save paper by clicking ‘Short’ on the Walk Options heading line, which hides the directions for all the longer variations but shows both endings.

Wednesday Walk Oxford Circular - The Rivers Isis and Cherwell, Port Meadow, Wolvercote Common, the Oxford Canal and Oxford Colleges

Book 1, Walk 13 - Oxford Circular Walk

Length: 16.3 km (10.1 miles) to include tour of Colleges -  without tour and today's suggested walk - circa 7 miles
Toughness: 1 out of 10  ( no hills today, but toughness rating more if you have to wade through flooded or muddy sections)

Either
London Paddington: 10-20 hrs  Great Western service to Oxford  Slough: 10-34 hrs   Reading: 10-48 hrs
Arrive Oxford: 11-12 hrs

Or
London Paddington: 09-43 hrs   TFL Rail service to Reading   Ealing Broadway: 09-51 hrs   Slough: 10-14 hrs  Reading: 10-43 hrs
Change at Slough or Reading to Oxford train as above

Return
Oxford to Paddington: direct service at 15-32, 16-02, 16-31, 17-01, 17-32, 18-02 hrs and so on
Changing at Didcot Parkway: 15-36, 17-07, 17-16 and 18-16 hrs

The rail service from Marylebone to Oxford is not recommended today as the journey time exceeds 90 minutes.

Rail ticket  if travelling on Great Western trains you will need a day return to Oxford. Seniors travelling on TFL Rail services may user their London Councils Freedom Passes as far as Reading "free of charge" and purchase a day return from Reading to Oxford. But please note you only have a 5 minute connection at Reading and it might be prudent to change trains at Slough, for a more relaxing connection (but you will need to purchase your onward ticket from Slough).  The choice is yours !

The suggested walk today takes you over Port Meadow to the village of Binsey, then on to Wolvercote for an early lunch at the Trout Inn with its attractive riverside setting (the alternative pub on Wolvercote Common - the Plough - is closed until 06 January).
After lunch I suggest we omit the walk to the start of the colleges tour, then the tour itself, and instead walk back to the city centre along the Oxfordshire canal - making today's walk a short post Christmas leg-stretcher, rather than a full blooded SWC walk. But do take all or part of the colleges tour if you wish - and if this walk is new to you. You should get to the start of the SWC walking tour, as detailed in the Walk Directions, before you lose daylight and it is safe to walk through the city streets as darkness descends.
This walk does not get posted very often - so enjoy !

Merstham to Tattenham Corner - an easy but scenic walk to work off that nut roast

Length: 17.3km (10.2 miles), with longer Epsom finish of 18.3km (11.3 miles) and shorter Tadworth one of 11.8km (7.3 miles)

10.00 Thameslink train** from London Bridge (9.38 Finsbury Park, 9.45 St Pancras International, 10.16 East Croydon), arriving Merstham 10.28

** Some train cancellations on Thameslink due to Covid-induced staff shortages are possible: if the 10.00 is not running, get the 10.30. If both are cancelled, we could meet by the ticket office at London Bridge at 10.15 and pick another place to walk...

Best ticket: Tattenham Corner and Tadworth are in zone six: Merstham and Epsom one stop outside it (and on completely different lines from each other). Oyster pay-as-you-go can be used at all four stations. It is a bank holiday today, so you get full discount on Network Cards (ie no £13 minimum).

For walk directions* click here (* click on the section headings for a brief summary of the route - quite useful with a map), for GPX click here, for a map of the route click here

At the time of writing, the future is uncertain....but assuming we are permitted to do it, this is a delightful and easy excursion along the North Downs escarpment and then inland up to Epsom Racecourse, including the magnificent view from Colley Hill, perhaps the best North Downs panorama of all.

Lunch pubs, if such things are still allowed, are available after 5 miles in Mogador (which sounds like a location in Lord of the Rings...) or 35 minutes later in Walton-on-the-Hill (which sounds like a folksy 1970s US sitcom): the latter also has a cafe, which may or may not be open. Not mentioned in the walk directions, as far as I can see, there is a rather superior tea kiosk next to the car park on Reigate Hill, about 2 miles into the walk, that has some nice food options (and outside tables) - if it is open today. Colley Hill is a stunning place for a picnic.

You can end the walk either in Tadworth (after 7.3 miles) Tattenham Corner (after 10.2 miles) or Epsom (11.3 miles): see below for train details. See the walk home page for the various tea/drinks options of these endings. There is sometimes a tea van (or is it a kiosk?) by the Epsom Racecourse at the Tattenham Corner end.

Trains back from Tattenham Corner are at 14 and 44 past, but seem to require a change in Purley today due to engineering works. Tadworth is served by the same train at 18 and 48 past.

Trains back from Epsom are at 19 and 49 past to Waterloo or 24 and 53 past to London Bridge. T=swc.4

Monday Walk Bank Holiday Monday: Sunningdale to Windsor - Virginia Water, Valley Gardens, Windsor Great Park, and The Long Walk to Windsor Castle

Book 1, Walk 18 - Sunningdale to Windsor

Length: 17 km (10.6 miles)
Toughness: 2 out of 10    No steep hills today   Modest inclines in Valley Gardens

London Waterloo:  09-50 hrs    South Western service to Reading    Clapham Junction:  09-58 hrs
Arrive Sunningdale: 10-38 hrs

Return
Windsor & Eton Riverside to Waterloo:  23 and 53 mins past the hour

Rail ticket:  today you will need a day return to Windsor & Eton Riverside plus a single from Staines to Sunningdale

As Her Majesty is spending the festive season at Windsor Castle this year she might appreciate a few scruffy, muddy SWC walkers popping in to pay their respects and scrounge a cup of tea - but not a lot.....

No matter, the SWC can make do with this undemanding walk through the royal parkland with its herds of deer. But before that, we enjoy Virginia Water - and the River Thames (yes, our water feature for today)  and Valley Gardens. Whilst it is the wrong time of year for the azaleas, the gardens are still pretty and pleasant to walk through. On then to the Totem Pole and Savill Gardens, where we stop for lunch at the Savill Garden Restaurant, a cafeteria managed by Benugo. It's quite nice and the food is 'twixt OK to good.  The nearby take-away kiosk might be open, if sandwichers wish to add to their picnics. Your picnic spot is the nearby Obelisk Pond.

Fed and watered, we walk down Rhododendron Drive to Cow Pond. We soon pass Royal Lodges before entering the Deer Park, where we have a choice of routes. If it is muddy we can head direct on tarmac ways to the Copper Horse statue of King Whoever, showing off on his charger,  before we embark on The Long Walk. The alternative route has us crossing parkland and through woodland before joining the Long Walk a bit further north. At the top of the Walk is Windsor Castle. The Long walk is a tease,  as the castle never seems to get any nearer as we plod on. But do persevere - and eventually the castle is directly in front of us. Here we swing left to enter the town. We should find quite a few establishments open (Covid rules permitting after Boxing Day) for tea or a tincture.

Boxing Day: Burn-off those Holiday Indulgences with a Walk from Highgate to Hampstead

Boxing Day: Highgate to Hampstead t=swc.257

Meet:
11:30 AM Highgate Underground Station (Turn left past the ticket barriers to meet by the Priory Gardens exit)

For those interested in the walk's pre-amble along the Parkland Walk, meet at 10:30 AM outside the main entrance to the Finsbury Park Underground Station which should get you to Highgate in time to meet the Highgate starters

The walk finishes at the Hampstead Underground Station.

Distance:  9.5 miles (15.3 km) for the main walk; 11.8 miles (19 km) if adding the Finsbury park pre-amble

Difficulty: 4 out of 10 for the main walk; 5 out of 10 for the longer version

This walk is mainly an urban outing exploring the "leafy" (doubt any will still be on the trees) Northern Heights of London, including the Hampstead Garden Suburb. In the afternoon the walk explores Hampstead Heath and the the village of Hampstead. For those wishing for a longer route, they can start an hour earlier at Finsbury Park and explore the Parkland Walk along a disused railway line. For those wishing a shorter walk, plenty of opportunities abound to abandon the adventure.

The recommended lunch pub is the Old Bull & Bush (7km into the main walk and 11 km into the longer walk). There are plenty of tea and post walk refreshment stops in Hampstead.

More information and the walk instruction and map can be found here.

Enjoy the walk and Happy Boxing Day!

Boxing Day Walk: Loughton to Epping

13.4km (8.4miles) Difficulty 3/10.

A waddle through the ancient woodland of Epping Forest to work off those free-range sprouts and the ‘festive’ nut roast. The forest is renowned for its ancient pollarded trees, primarily oak, beech and hornbeam, which support a wealth of rare insects and fungi. The afternoon takes you through open countryside with good views around Copped Hall Park.
Transport
The walk starts from Loughton Underground Station at 10.30am. Meet outside near the ticket gates.
Loughton and Epping are both in Travel Zone 6 on the Central Line. Trains are frequent. It takes about 40 minutes to travel from Oxford Circus to Loughton. Use the TfL journey planner to calculate your journey time from other stations. There is car-parking at both Loughton and Epping underground stations.
Lunch
It being Xmas, service may not be as expected so bring picnic items just in case.
You first reach High Beach Visitor Centre where there is a refreshments kiosk (cash-only), toilets, café and the Kings Oak pub (0208 508 5000). There are also picnic benches nearby.
The Horseshoes pub (01992  712745 ) in Copthall Green is better placed, with friendly service and good food. Booking advised. Nearby, the entrance gate to St Thomas’ Church leads to a pleasant grassy area with wooden benches suitable for a picnic.
 Tea
The recommended tea stop is the Verde Café, 88 High Street, Epping (01992 571476). It closes at 4pm on a Sunday. Otherwise, there are pubs, cafes and restaurants in Epping High Street.
Walk Directions here
You can shorten the walk to about 5 miles by staying on the 3 Forest Way between paragraphs 7 and 30. Map or GPS advised for forest section.
The 'right fork/horseshoe post' is no longer visible at paragraph 4. Instead, turn right at the crosspaths.

Walk posting - and train time changes - on behalf of Bridie

Today's half-walk is posted on behalf of SWC's  Mid-Week "Foodies" who appreciate fine food - and an excuse to visit the Pot Kiln pub in Frilsham for an indulgent pre-Christmas luncheon.

For full enjoyment of your gourmet luncheon it is recommended you conclude the walk at the lunch pub - and take time over what is usually an excellent meal. There is no point in coming on this walk if you do not intend to have lunch at the Pot Kiln - you will not have time to continue on to Woolhampton in daylight.  As the Pot Kiln is a very popular pub and gets booked up early please contact the pub asap if you wish to join Bridie and others for lunch: one table has been booked for six for 12-45 hrs. The Pot Kiln's telephone number is 01635 201 366     Places still available as of 21/12

As for the morning walk, it is a pleasant, undulating stretch through the woods and commons of West Berkshire.

After your leisurely lunch you will need to take taxis to the nearest railway station - Midgham (Woolhampton).

Indulge !  An alternative Wednesday walk is posted for our non-foodies today.

Rail ticket:  Today you will need to buy a day return to Wanborough plus an off peak single from Godalming to Guildford

Whilst our mid-week foodies are heading for the Pot Kiln for their pre-Christmas indulgence, the rest of us will give this short but lovely walk a go. Most of you will be familiar with it, so I will not bumble on, other than to say in the morning we cross open fields to pass Wanborough Manor and its tiny church. A steady but easy ascent takes us over the Hoggs Back, then down through a vineyard and on along the North Downs Way to Compton where we find Watts Gallery and Watts Chapel. Picnickers often stop here for their lunch, popping into the very good Watts Gallery tea shop for a drink, whilst pub goers will have to wait until they are back in Godalming - unfortunately, their usual pub lunch stop, the Withies Inn, in Compton is CLOSED until 28 December following an outbreak of Covid amongst the pub's staff.

After  Compton we head through woods and over fields before dropping down to the River Wey, for a relaxing final leg beside the river, all the "way" into Godalming. Tea options are detailed in the Walk Directions.

This short walk seldom disappoints.

Sunday walk Horsley to West Byfleet

T=swc.214

Length  9.6 Miles (15.4 Km) The walk can be shortened by taking a bus from the RHS Wisley bus stop to Guildford or to Kingston(via Esher and Surbiton).

Toughness: 3 out of 10

Trains: 10.00 Portsmouth Harbour train from Waterloo (10.09 Clapham Junction) changing at Surbiton to catch the 10.32 to Horsley, arriving 10.53.

Return trains from West Byfleet to London: xx:10, xx:40 and xx:56 (a slow train).

Buy a day return to Guildford to cover both outward and return journeys.

Green woods and fields, the yellow scrub and heathland of Ockham Common, Wisley Common and RHS Wisley Gardens and a canal side pub on the Wey navigation. A previous posting of this walk suggested it might make a good pre-Christmas outing. There are seasonal festivities at RHS Wisley and some may wish to visit. The public foothpath is outside the perimiter of the gardens. There is an entry charge for non-members.

Lunch: There are two pubs - one early and one late in the walk - and booking is advisable for both: The Black Swan is 3 miles into the walk at Martyr's Green. It should be reached around midday.

The Anchor, at Pyrford Lock is 12.7km (7.8 miles) into the walk. It serves food all afternoon.

The Wisley Cafe is located at the entrance to the gardens and accessible without paying an entry fee, It could be very busy so bring emergency rations in case of lengthy queues.

Tea: If the Anchor is not too busy, it might make a good stop for tea and festive drinks. Otherwise, there are several coffee shops on Station Approach in West Byfleet and there's one at the station.

Saturday Walk - Riddlesdown to Coulsdon South

 Riddlesdown to Coulsdon South T=2.15

Length: 16.8km (10.4 miles) shortcuts available. 4 out of 10.

A short journey, a big pub (Vintage Inn chain) & a common for picnics.

"Considering that it starts in the suburbs of London (and within the boundaries of London Transport Travelcard zone six), this walk passes through some remarkably unspoilt countryside. Farthing Down, Kenley Common, Riddlesdown and Cousldon Commons are all ancient grazing lands, lovingly preserved as part of the London Greenbelt, and offering a delightful series of woods and open spaces. This is also a fine walk for a brisk winter's day, and offers numerous idyllic spots for a picnic."

Trains: Get the 1020 East Grinstead train from Victoria (Clapham 1026, east Croydon 1039), arriving Riddlesdown 1048. Return trains are xx10 & xx37 to London Bridge, calling at East Croydon. All in Zone 6.

Lunch: The Fox pub (tel 01883 330401) on Coulsdon Common serves food all day from noon and has a large seating capacity both inside and in the garden. Can be booked online. It is 6.2km (3.9 miles) from Riddlesdown.

Tea: Seems to be a bit limited, but a short walk takes you to Coulsdon town centre & the additional choice of (slower) trains from Coulsdon Town station.

Winchester Circular - a Christmas market and a possible drinks stop on St Catherine’s Hill

Length: 18km (11.2 miles), with shorter options of 15.6km (9.7 miles) or (9.1km (5.6 miles).  T=swc.15

Catch the 10.05 train from Waterloo (10.12 Clapham Junction) to Winchester, arriving 11.04.

For walk directions click here, for GPX click here, and for a map of the route click here

One motive for posting this walk is that Winchester looks very cheerful in the run-up to Christmas, and has a Christmas market in its cathedral grounds. The website for this says that the stalls are being spaced out a bit this year to allow for more social distancing.

I was also wondering if anyone would be interested, if the weather is not hostile, in having festive drinks and snacks on the top of St Catherine's Hill - ie sharing a bottle of wine or two, bringing some food that can be shared in a Covid-safe kind of way (or just consuming your own food - no pressure to share....). My idea is that this might replace the pub lunch, and we then get back earlier to Winchester for tea or the Christmas market. There is no particular need to decide about this in advance, since the walk starts by walking through the centre of Winchester, and food/wine could be bought there, but if you are keen on the idea and want to encourage others, you could post a comment below.

Otherwise, this is a fine downland walk, taking in the ancient hill fort of St Catherine's Hill, with panoramic views, and giving good views of Winchester Cathedral on the approach back to Winchester. You also pass all the historic attractions in this ancient town, including a couple of city gates and Winchester College (the public school).

For more information on the various historic attractions, see pages 2-5 of the walk directions. Pages 13-15 also have a walking tour of Winchester Cathedral (though you will need to pay an entrance fee to get in to it). You can also find all this information at the bottom of the walk's home page

If you do want a pub lunch, the Bridge in Shawford, serves food all afternoon and is capacious, but it is also popular: it is probably worth booking a table. Expect to get there at about 1.45pm if doing the full walk, or 1pm if doing the riverside short cut (see below).

After St Catherine's Hill, there are two ways to shorten the walk:

1) A riverside short cut to Shawford (lots of motorway noise initially, but a very pretty route through watermeadows, as featured in the Chris Packham programme on BBC TV The Walk that Made Me. This reduces the walk to 15.6km (9.7 miles)

2) A Tourist Loop that takes you across the watermeadows from St Catherine's Hill and back into the town. This gives a walk of just 8.9km (5.5 miles) and is ideal if you want to explore Winchester or the Christmas market a bit more.

Tea options and characterful pubs in Winchester are too numerous to list, though the home page for this walk has various ideas.

Trains back are at 18 and 48 past (there is also a slightly slower 56 past, only worth getting if you just miss the 48 past). The 18 past stops at Clapham Junction: otherwise changing at Woking gives you a speedy connection.

Saturday Walk Beaconsfield to Amersham - Seer Green, Jordans Village, a Quaker Burial Ground and Meeting House, Chalfonts St Peter and St Giles, then on to Amersham

Beaconsfield to Amersham

A mix and match walk - starting with reverse of afternoon leg of Book 1, Walk 10 - Beaconsfield Circular
then switching to SWC 36 from Chalfont St Giles to Amersham

Length: 16.4 km (10.2 miles)    Most of the walk is before lunch
Toughness: 5 out of 10  (a bit more when afternoon leg is muddy)

London Marylebone:  09-42 hrs   Chilterns service to Oxford
Arrive Beaconsfield : 10-08 hrs

Return

Either
Amersham to Marylebone:  Chilterns service at 08 and 38 mins past the hour

Or
LT Metropolitan Line to Baker Street - usually 2 an hour

Rail ticket  Holders of Freedom passes and all zone travel cards  - probably a single from the end of your pass or travel card to Beaconsfield. The return from Amersham should be covered by you pass/card. Otherwise, it's separate singles.

We tried out this hybrid, mix-and-match walk on New Year's Day 2020, and apart from a disastrous lunch stop, the actual walk worked quite well for a winter's outing with a difference. This way round, on the Beaconsfield Circular, we should avoid the worst of the muddy bits, and enjoy a route alongside a golf course and up through a Quaker Village then a Quaker meeting house and burial ground, before walking along field edges next to where the River Misbourne used to flow, from Chalfont St Peter to Chalfont St Giles. We stop in the latter village for lunch. Merlins Cave, which let me down in 2020, was absolutely fine when I called in just before Lockdown One, and ditto earlier this year, and it's worth a try as the pub-restaurant is large,  and quite comfy inside.

After lunch, it is uphill along a quiet road then up through a farm and over what can be muddy fields before we drop down to the town of Old Amersham. It is a twenty minute walk - again uphill - from the Old Town to the New Town where we find Amersham Railway Station for our journey home. Tea stops are as noted in the Directions.

Wednesday Walk Garston to St Albans - Bricket Wood Common, River Ver, Moor Mill, then Ver Valley Walk to St Albans and its Cathedral

Book 1, Walk 7 - Garston to St Albans

Length: 14 km (8.7 miles)
Toughness: 2 out of 10   (a bit more when Bricket Common is slubberdub)

London Euston:  10-24 hrs    West Midlands service to Northampton
Arrive Watford Junction: 10-39 hrs   Change trains
Leave Watford Junction:  11-00 hrs  West Midlands service from Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey
Arrive Garston: 11-05 hrs

Return

Either
St Albans Abbey to Euston, changing at Watford Junction: 15-07, 16-06, 16-52, 17-37, 18-37 and 19-17 hrs

Or
St Albans City to London St Pancras:  6 fast trains an hour plus stopping services

Rail ticket:  if you are returning from the Abbey station, buy a day return to St Albans Abbey. If you are planning to return from the City station, you will need separate singles today.

We traditionally post this walk just before Christmas, as at walk-end it is a nice to visit the Cathedral - and the Christmas Market in its precincts (if it hasn't been cancelled this year).

As for the walk, it is surprisingly rural given much of its route is squeezed in between two motorways. Yes - in places you can hear traffic noise, depending on the wind's direction, but it seldom spoils ones enjoyment of this walk.  Setting out from Garston, we soon walk through Bricket Wood Common, which at any time of year can be squelchy, and after periods of heavy rain - muddy. But this leg does not last long, and we are soon walking through the grounds of Munden House before we head along a long, undulating bridleway to Netherwylde Farm. We then cross the river Colne then a field and continue along a long field edge to Moor Mill, and the river Ver. I suggest we stop here for lunch at the Moor Mill (Inn), part of the Beefeater chain of family pub-restaurants - it is better than you might think, and perfectly adequate for a SWC lunch stop.  After lunch we will spend a few minutes feeding the ducks from the twenty pence food dispensers - harmless fun !

The afternoon leg has us crossing a pedestrian bridge over the M25 before an undulating woodland section with lakes down below takes us towards the village of Park Street - with its two pubs, for anyone who did not fancy Moor Mill. We then continue over water meadows - which can be squelchy - to follow the River Ver on the Ver Valley walk towards St Albans - and its Cathedral. After visiting the Cathedral and taking tea, if you wish you can stay on to attend Choral Evensong at 5 pm - a delightful short service. We then say goodbye to the Cathedral and head down towards the Fighting Cocks pub - a must for lovers of real ale - then it's through Verulamium Park, with its lakes and Roman ruins. We leave the park just after the sports centre to cross an A road by lights - to head up a short section of access road to St Albans Abbey railway station. Directions to the alternative, St Albans City railway station are included in the Walk Directions - with link below.

This walk replaces the Chesham walk, which is cancelled due to there being no early trains. Instead, you're being sent to explore London‘s ‘Northern Heights’ - the hills above and behind the more famous ones of Hampstead and Highgate. At one point on this walk you can actually look down on Alexandra Palace and Highgate Hill.
Trains get the Northern line to arrive at Totteridge for 10:30 (a train departs Tottenham Ct Road at 9:45, arriving  1022). Use journey planner to plot your own route.
Return trains are frequent.
Lunch
The recommended pub is the Three Hammers in Mill Hill, 020 8959 2173, 7.6km (4.7 miles)
other possibilities are the Rising Sun and (on the morning shortcut) the Summer House,  the cafe of Finchley Nurseries.
Tea up the hill from Totteridge & Whetstone station, say 300 metres. there is a Costa Coffee, open till 5.30pm, with the independent Caffe Agust just beyond it, open until  6pm..If you take the Totteridge Village ending. you may be able to get in the Orange Tree. Sounds a bit posh..

Ho! Ho! Ho! Festive Fun on an Arundel High Road Circular (with shorter options)

Book 1 Walk 32 plus Book 2 walk 22 makes for a High Road Arundel Circular t=1.32

Distance:  Something for everyone…..the full proposed distance is about 15 miles/24 km. However, you could do the book 1 walk as written (11.7 miles/18.8 km, with various options to shorten, including a short circular version of 8.5 miles/13.6 km) or for late starters, you could plan to arrive in Amberley about 12:30ish and do the afternoon leg of 9 miles/14 km….

Difficulty:  3-5 out of 10, depending on route taken….

Train:  9:35 AM Portsmouth Harbour/Bognor Regis train from London Victoria (9:42 Clapham; 9:53 East Croydon), arriving in Arundel at 11:01 (or for those wishing for a little extra time to do the full walk, take the 9:05 AM). Return trains from Arundel are at 13 and 46 minutes past the hour and from Amberley at 16:40 and then 17 minutes past the hour. Buy a day return to Arundel.

The Arundel and Amberley area provides a wealth of delightful walking options, both high along the hills and lower down along the river valley. Additionally, during the month of December, Arundel provides holiday cheer with pretty Christmas decorations and festive fun (see Arundel at Christmas), making it an ideal place to start and/or finish a walk.  Options available today range from a long walk to much shorter options allowing you to spend more time visiting Arundel.

The main proposed route combines two walks from our repertoire for a “high road” circular from Arundel to Amberley for lunch (at the Bridge Inn or Riverside Café) and back again on a mostly high route across the downs to Burpham and then along the river to Arundel. The full route is admittedly long for this time of year (and you may wish to start on the 9:05 AM train to give yourself a bit of extra daylight time). However, the last two miles are mostly along the river which is easy to follow in low light.

The route starts with Book 1 Walk 32 on its route through Arundel and Arundel Park which you follow to point 24 where you take the short cut and turn left towards Houghton Bridge…..then pick up Book 2 walk 22 just outside the Amberley train station.

You can find more information about the walk(s), including the various options available, and download the walk instructions here and here.

Happy Holidays!

Christmas at Kew - More tickets now available

Fear Christmas might be cancelled again this year? Fear no more! If everything else is shutdown, this event may just survive and be the last one still standing.

Join us for an exciting light show at Kew Gardens this Christmas as the magical winter trail lights up the evening skies.

Enjoy the after-dark festivities with friends, as you discover sparkling tunnels of light, dancing waterside reflections, and trees drenched in jewel-like colour on your way to the panoramic Palm House light display.  Walk under the stars and have a holly, jolly Christmas as seasonal sounds fill the air.

Along the route, delicious independent street food vendors will offer tasty festive delights, from hot food and sweet treats to spiced winter warmers and hot chocolate. The detail of F&B stores is posted on the Kew website, click here.

Kew has just released more tickets for our event date (as of Nov 26), if you would like to attend this event, I would recommend that you book asap.  Failing that,  there may be return tickets if you check the Kew website regularly closer to the event date.

To attend the event:  please click here to book your ticket.   Book Lion Gate entry at 7pm.  The Lion Gate is 10-15 mins walk along Kew Road from Kew Gardens tube station.  Tickets cost £21.5 plus booking fee.

Meeting place:  Lion Gate at 6:45pm for meet and greet before we go off at our own pace.

Whatsapp Group:  It is likely the group will be separated along the path, I suggest we meet up afterwards somewhere towards the end of the path (at Victoria Plaza Cafe and Shops as an initial meeting place.  We may move to another place if Victoria Plaza is too crowded - see F&B map link above).  You are welcome to bring a bottle to share with friends.  I have set up a Whatsapp group for this event so we can co-ordinate on the day.  If you have a ticket and wish to be on it, please email swcsocialATgmailDOTcom with your mobile number, I will add you to the group.

Additional Information

Last year, during the height of pandemic when nobody was vaccinated, Christmas at Kew was open and fully booked. They had an one-way walking trail and required mask wearing. I think the chance of cancellation this year will be pretty small.  However,  if you are worried about cancellations due to Covid,  Kew Gardens has a policy of exchange/refund. For more information, please click here.  I would recommend booking with your credit card rather than a debit card as you will have a better consumer rights protection with a credit card.  You can also purchase an insurance protection at the checkout for a small fee.

Please note if you decide to enter from another gate, you may not find the group easily if they run one-way system as they did last year.

If you come by car, street parking in nearby streets around the Lion Gate is free in the evenings or you can also purchase a parking space provided by Kew when you book your entry ticket.  For details of parking zone, please click here
