As the time for the walk approached the weather forecast improved until we ended up with virtually no rain.
I thought I’d done this walk previously but although some places such as Brocket Hall and the Brocket Arms were familiar, all else was new and in my opinion very attractive.
Recent rain had not entirely removed the leaf cover and a watery sunshine revealed the countryside in still gorgeous autumnal tints.
Despite being close to London, the walk is quiet and seemingly remote.
Two ate at the Brocket Arms ( doing very good business) while nine had to scrabble for the six seats outside the ruined St Lawrence old church. The gateway to said ruin has been permanently locked and a notice states that should you hop over the wall, it’s “at your own risk’”
Back in Welwyn Garden City our only complaint with The Doctor’s Tonic was lack of choice in the Real Ale department , which caused a split in the ranks with a breakaway faction heading to The Willows where they enjoyed some Butcombe beer

Of the group who stopped in the Brocket Arms, I think three went for tea at Simmons and two, also deciding against the Doctor's Tonic, went to the Two Willows. All were back at the station by 1620 but the tea party caught the Moorgate train so I didn't hear how they got on. I hadn't done the walk before either and agree it was better than expected, especially the morning. Thanks for posting it
