16.6km (10.4 miles), difficulty 5 out of 10
A walk in zone 6, surprisingly rural in character, passing through fields, woods, quiet valleys, and shady bridleways. The lunchtime pub is said to be 'a real gem'. One or two climbs but mostly plain sailing.
Trains: Get the 09:42 Caterham train from London Bridge, platform 11 (Norwood Junction 10:00, East Croydon 10:03 platform 3) to Whyteleafe arriving 10:16.
Return trains from Hayes to Charing Cross at xx:11and xx:41 Both stations are in Zone 6.
Lunch: The White Bear, Fickleshole, ( 01883 779384 ) an attractive oak-timbered 16th century building. Food served all day.
Tea: There are two pubs near the station,
The Real Ale Way a micropub - beers and ciders from the cask. Recommended.
The New Inn, a large bar/restaurant, almost opposite Hayes station, open all day and serves tea and coffee as well as the usual range of pub drinks and meals.
Costa coffee shop, open to 5.30pm Sun.

Train connections are slightly different (may have changed since this was posted). 9.42 is currently advertised to call at Norwood J at 9.55 and East Croydon at 10.00, arriving Whyeleafe at 10.16
N=10 Nine at the station and one joining later. W= Very_mild_and_sunny for November. Leaves are falling fast but there was a spectacular beech tree in full autumn colour on the climb out of Whyteleafe Park. We tried to book a table at the White Bear from the station but all tables were taken. However, we had made good progress arriving just before 12.30 and five of us were able to have lunch, there seem to be two small tables as you come in that they do not reserve and we said we would be away by 13.30. Three of us had the chicken roast which was generously proportioned, served very promptly and up to the White Bear's high standard. I cannot report on the afternoon as I decided to walk back to Whyteleafe, perhaps another walker will add a few lines.
