Length: 14.2 km (8.8 miles). Toughness: 2/10
10:38 Didcot train from Paddington, arriving Maidenhead at 10:59. Freedom Pass holders could take the Elizabeth line train starting from Paddington at 10:14 (Ealing Broadway 10:22), arriving Maidenhead 5 minutes earlier (same platform). If travelling on the GWR train buy a return to Marlow; Freedom Pass holders using the Elizabeth line will only need to buy a single ticket (or use contactless, but not Oyster) for the return leg from Marlow to Maidenhead.
Return trains from Marlow are hourly at xx:29, changing at Maidenhead.
For a shorter walk of 8.2 km you could return from Cookham station (trains at xx:44). Conversely, there are ways of extending the walk beyond Marlow: see the walk page for a couple of suggestions.
This is an easy walk along one of the prettiest stretches of the Thames, where there should still be some fine autumn colour on the long wooded escarpment below Cliveden. If you want a pub lunch there are at least three establishments in Cookham to choose from, all summarised in the walk document.
The afternoon leg includes a stretch along a wooded ridge with fine views of the Thames. A recent report says that Marlow's recommended tea place (the incongruously-named Burgers patisserie) has permanently closed, but there are plently of other places along its High Street as well as the Marlow Donkey pub near the station.
Please bring the directions from the L=swc.56 page.

I can only give a partial report, but 10 walkers on the Liz line saw that the GWR train was going to be ten minutes late and decided to set off. They politely hung around by the river waiting for 6 more to catch up, so N=16 on a W=cloudy day. The group split up at Cookham; some lunched at the King's Arms and another group carried on along the Thames Path to the Bounty. My dodgy back persuaded me to return from Cookham so it would be nice to hear how others got on.
