Saturday Walk - A river valley, gentle pastures, Watts Gallery, woods, remote heathlands and heather covered moors: Guildford to Farnham

Length: 22.1 km (13.7 mi) 
Ascent/Descent: 281/243m
Net Walking Time: ca. 5 hours 
Toughness: 5 out of 10 (higher for the Hog’s Back start)
 
Take the 10.00 Portsmouth Harbour train from Waterloo (10.25 Woking), arrives Guildford 10.32. From Clapham Junction take the 09.57 to Woking and change there. 
Return trains from Farnham are on xx.28 and xx.58 (changing at Woking may cut off a few minutes).  
Buy a Farnham return.
 
Pretty villages, gentle green pastures, and the country houses of retired stockbrokers. Then, after lunch, surprisingly wild and uninhabited Surrey heathlands - a vast area of woods and heather-covered moors (now past their best).
 
Options: 
-      Alternative Start via the Hog’s Back ridge (shorter but more strenuous); 
-      Guildford Circular (13.4 km);
-      Farnham Circular (16.2 km).
 
Lunch: Watts Gallery Café (10.00-17.00), The Good Intent in Puttenham (8.9 km, lunch served 12.00-14.30) on the main walk. Or on the Guildford Circular walk: The Withies Inn in Compton (7.2 km, lunch served 12.00-14.00). 
Tea: The Mulberry near the station plus several pubs further into town (check the webpage for details).

I only went as far as Puttenham as I had things to do later but I can report #7 on the walk in #occasional-sun. Two had a lunch date with whom they rendezvoused at Watts Chapel; all the rest visited the pub in Puttenham where one ate - fish and chips looked good.
