7 and a dog met at the station. 6 opted for the Hogs Back route, and 1, who only had the book directions, took the book route. (The dog wasn’t bothered either way).
The six were surprised to find a whole hillside of oilseed rape in flower. In November or what? Quite a sight.
The promised drizzle never happened, leaving us with a w=cloudy-dry day, not too bad underfoot.
The 6 divided at Compton with 3 heading for the gallery caff (busy) and 3 for the Withies (also busy) after a brief look in the chapel. (You can’t not look in the chapel)
In the Withies the 3 caught up with Walker 7 who was already well into a ploughman’s. 2 stayed for a meal. Walker 3 and Walker 7 left after a drink. Not sure if the Watts 3 caught up with the remaining Withies 2. Walker 7 sped ahead leaving Walker 3 to find his own way back. Add in the Wanborough 1 (see other comments), and that makes us n=8 in total.
The Yvonne Artaud seemed to be closed so no meet-up there. Walker 3 got the 15:34 all by himself.
All in all a pleasant autumnal day out.

Love the walk report M Tiger. Reads like one of my schools maths problems but missing the final bit: how many people had chips at the Withies?

Walker said...

The rapeseed was almost certainly white mustard (which is yellow). It is grown as a cover crop, to keep the soil active between crop plantings. Later in the winter they kill it off and plant commercial crops.

Walker: thinking about it, it did seem to be a softer yellow than OSR. That also explains the smattering of other flowers phacellia and (er) flax.
Pete b they wouldn’t let me near enough the tables .to check for chips.

Yes, phacelia, flax and buckwheat are used too. There is also stubble turnip which produces foliage and turnips that sheep are then grazed on.
