Hassocks to Brighton walk

Length: 14 miles/22.5 km

Short walk ending in Falmer 7.5 miles where you can catch a train or bus to Brighton
Toughness: 7 out of 10 (6 out of 10 for short version)
Train: Take the 9:46am from Victoria (CJ 9.53: E Croy 10.04)  arriving  Hassocks at 10.47.

This is an enjoyable walk from Hassocks to the sea at Brighton.   This route traverses north to south exploring hidden valleys, woods, open access and park land. The goal is the lively town of Brighton and the sea but first you will pass through the pretty village of Ditchling, walk over Ditchling Beacon, through Stanmer Park, passing Stanmer House (a lunch option) then through the University of Sussex campus to Falmer, the pub stop on the walk

For more information on the walk, see here.

Lunch: The suggested lunch pub is the Swan Inn in Falmer.
Other Refreshments: Many places to eat and drink in Brighton

Route goes past the best fish and chips in Brighton, called Little Jack Fullers, in St James’s Street, near corner of Madeira Place, Brighton

Around 12 of us gathered outside Hassocks station, and were joined soon after by 2 others, so #14 (one person was reported to have missed the train so don’t know if they joined the walk later on) We were also joined by one of the original designers of this lovely walk.
The weather was #warm-with-sunshine-and-clouds initially, turning sunny later in the afternoon.
We all had lunch in Stanmer, some in the Stanmer Café and others in the sunny grounds of the house rather than in the church. One had lunch in the pub. A few purchased fruit juices from the presses in the Fruit Factory.
Quite a few people took the train/bus back to Brighton in Falmer after lunch– one said she would go to Brighton and have a swim.
Five us continued on the main walk, over more Downs, the race course and through inviting woods. Once in Kemp Town, we cut down to the beach, here losing one who caught the bus to the station. Four of us went to the beach, where one swam and one paddled. The sea was a bit rough but warm and wonderful on tired feet and legs.
One then left us, and three of us had drinks in the Bison Beach Bar on the seafront near Sealanes, as the Volk trains trundled past us. We had a lovely evening under clear blue skies, then walked towards the station to purchase fish and chips and wine. We discovered our train had been cancelled so had the fish outside the Chippy, then walked up to the station, to a scene of chaos, but luckily caught the Gatwich Express back to London.
A lovely day out.
