Wednesday walk - Guildford via Chantries and Albury finishing at Chilworth

T=swc.57 This is a short option from the Guildford circular via Chantries walk.

Length: 8.1 miles if you end at Chilworth (or 12.6 miles if you want to continue to Guildford).

Difficulty: 4 out of 10

Trains: 9.45 from London Waterloo (Clapham Junction 9.52, Woking 1013) arrives Guildford 1025

Returning from Chilworth trains run at 15.07, 16.07, 17.37. Journey time 8 minutes.  Bus number 32 runs from Blacksmiths Lane to Guildford at 15.29 and 15.43, 16.29 and 17.10.

From Guildford there are around six trains an hour to London Waterloo. The fastest seem to be at xx.19 and xx.49.

Buy a return ticket to Chilworth or Guildford if finishing there.

Lunch: The Drummond at Albury (01483 202 039) 9.1km (5.6 miles) into the main walk, is a large and pleasant pub serving both restaurant-style meals and cheaper bar classics.

Tea: The Percy Arms in Chilworth (01483 561 765), is a possible tea stop if still open when you reach Chilworth. Otherwise, there are options at Guildford station.

N=8 off the posted train agreed to do the Pewley Down route to St Martha's to avoid potentially muddy ground on the riverside route. This was a good warm-up and was virtually mud free but it cut out Chantrey's Hill whichas a disappointment for anyone looking forward to it. During the descent from St Martha's, this walker managed to lose the other 7 and with a dysfunctional GPS went off in the wrong direction eventually getting to Albury via a path from New lands down by which time the 7 had finished their picnics and we're on their way to Chilworth. They decided to continue to Shalford as the day was still young. In the meantime, a group of 3 had taken a later train and were joined by a car driver who walked with them to Albury and had lunch at the Drummond before walking back to their car . The other 4 picnicked at the church before continuing to Chilworth where they caught the train to Guildford locking up the 7 Shalford walkers along the way. I finished at Albury where the bus stop indicated a Guildford bus due in 15 minutes. Home before dark. The walk was enjoyable despite .w=overcast-drizzly conditions. N=12 walkers including the two pub lunchers.

Correction - 3 caught the train from Chilworth picking up the 7 who extended their walk to Shalford.
