The evening started with an early diner for 7 at Cote. As always, food here was excellent, and also very good value for money. Some had three courses and others just had main, but all enjoyed their meal. The place was full but the service was efficient to get us all out in time for our concert. At the concert hall, we met two other walkers, one of whom also did one of the Sunday walks earlier. n=9.
The concert was an interesting selection of pieces. We found Vaughan Williams Symphony No 9 hard to comprehend. There were a lot of drama, colour, but it never went anywhere. At the interval, we discovered this was William's last piece of major work, he died a few months later, perhaps it was meant not to go anywhere, one walker said....
In contrast, Elgar's Cello Concerto was fantastic. David Cohen was mesmerising and played the cello brilliantly. It was immensely moving music, as one walker put it: it would be hard to keep your eyes dry. The concert ended with Arnold Bax's passionate piece Tintagel.
A great evening out to conclude this year's social calender. Thank you all for coming for making this year social events most enjoyable!
