Toughness 5/10
This walk takes you along the Hangers Way through unspoilt Hampshire countryside. There is a steep climb up Shoulder of Mutton Hill - with good views back - but you can take a longer gentler route up if you prefer. Later, there are good views down the other side, as is quite often the case with hills.
Trains: Get the 09:30 Portsmouth Harbour train from Waterloo (Clapham Jct. 09:39) arriving Petersfield 10:45.
Trains return from Liss at xx:29. Get a return to Petersfield
Lunch: The Hawkley Inn in Hawkley (01730 827205) Phoning advised.
Tea: The Whistlestop pub, just past the station.
Directions: here. The walk can be shortened to 7 miles by following the shortcut below (not included in the directions but described on the intro page under ‘walk options’).
- "The length of this walk can be reduced by 5.5km by taking a shortcut at point [6]. From the Hawkley Inn head east along Pococks Lane [i.e turn left coming out instead of right] and continue on a footpath heading north-east to Upland Lane. Turn right onto this road to rejoin the main route between points [8] and [9]."

Are people on the later service?
Two of us were on the delayed 9:30 from Waterloo and started 5min late. Didn’t see anyone so we headed off. Was anyone else out today?
N=2 ?
(Feel free to update)
The train set off ten minutes late, and we two were ordered off at Haslemere as it wasn’t going to stop at Petersfield.
Then came the U-turn and we're ordered back on board. Only five mins late in the end despite the drama.
The Shoulder of Mutton hill is a tough nut to crack, but the weather was perfect, w=brilliant-sunshine-with-a-cooling-breeze
The Hawkley Inn was officially booked up, but with their usual can do attitude, they rustled up what my companion described as the best Halloumi veggie burger he’s had in a long time.
No hills, just beautiful woodlands and quiet pastures after lunch. In Liss we had time for another pint in the public bar of the Whistle Stop. Friendly, with excellent ales, it was full of local men who could cut up that fallen tree or unblock a drain for you. Quite lacking in Islington marketing or PR types, which makes a change. A wonderful day out.
