Lyme Regis to Axminster
Monday 30th June 2025
Description: This is
another pretty route through quiet woods, streams, fields and lanes. This is a different route from the one we took on Friday.
Length: 11.9 miles
Toughness: 4/10
GPX: Lyme Regis to Axminster
#/test/tahnyet/Lyme-Regis-Axminster.gpx
Detail: this is a gently
undulating walk starting along the river Lim in town, then onto the Wessex
Ridgeway and through the woods of Hole Common. Some parts maybe boggy depending on recent
rainfall. After this you cross the A35. TAKE CARE as fast traffic both ways. If you walk to your left along this road for
roughly 100m, there may be a safer place to cross using the central reservation. Continue on through Wyld Warren, another
wood, and finally along Evil Lane into Axminster. Plenty of shops, cafes pubs in Axminster (if
you have time to linger) otherwise purchase supplies for the train
Meet at the clocktower on the
seafront at 10am.
Lunch: Buy something to eat and drink before setting
off as no pubs or shops on this route until you get to Axminster.
If you wish to omit this
walk then the buses back to Axminster from Lyme Regis leaving from The Square
(at the clocktower) are:
Bus X53 10.19am; 12.19;14.19;16.25; 16.46
Bus X51 11.19;
13.19; 15.19;15.37; 17.21; 18.18

Today, around #13 people gathered at the clock tower on the seafront on a #hot and sunny morning. 3 opted to do the Seaton tramway, which has proved very popular on this trip; 6 did the first half of the underciff walk starting from Lyme Regis, and 4 of these 6 did the Pinhay extension giving expansive and wonderful views towards Lyme and the coastline. 1 had returned home earlier this morning. 4 (including me) walked back to Axminster on a different route from last Friday’s.
Fortunately there were plenty of woods and shady parts on this walk, but also some open fields. The weather was hot, but there was the occasional breeze. We were rewarded with fantastic views of the beautiful Dorset countryside. Once in Axminster we loaded up with provisions, and upon arrival at the station about 8 gathered to get on the 17.07 train. Sadly, upon reaching Andover, we were all turfed out due signalling problems, and had to get on a bus to Basingstoke, where blissfully, we scrambled onto a fast (and air conditioned) train back to London. So delayed by over 1 hour.
I think everyone found something they liked on this holiday – walking, swimming, rides on open topped trams, etc. A special thanks to Paul (Boonster) for designing the walks, Dirk for suggesting the Pinetum extension on Friday, and Sean and Andrew M for their help and patience with the technical side of posting.
Branchline😊 sounds like a resounding success, didn't go due to just coming back from Devon recently. would you consider repeating it or a variation soon?
I too missed it due to prior commitments so a repeat would be appreciated.
The routes for this holiday are being updated. People can still use the existing routes if they wish to do so and I am hoping to re-schedule this trip for Summer 2026.
