Ham Street
to Appledore – a foray into Romney Marshes
This walk
has not been done on a Saturday since 2017.
If you are using the printed directions, choose Option A (which will
cleverly cut out the directions you do not need – thank you Sean).
This is a
peaceful, quiet walk with a very away from it all feel. Today’s walk takes you through Ham Street
Nature Reserve, then back through Ham Street eventually bringing you to the
Military Canal. The route then takes you
to Warehorne for lunchtime pub conveniently situated opposite St Mathews Church
for picknickers. After lunch, we stay on
the Saxon Shoreway stopping to view St Mary’s Church outside Kenardington, and then
on towards the Mount to get views of the expanse of Romney Marshes. We then walk through Park wood and Heron
Wood, and on to Appledore.

#4 walkers disembarked from the train at Ham Street. We had a few problems finding the start of the walk, but then got going through the woods of the Ham Street nature reserve, and then out along the Military Canal. We got to the Woolpack Inn at around 1.30 where 2 of us ate outdoors and one indoors, and one joined us for a cider. Friendly service and very nice food. Weather was #sunny-and-breezy which kept the temperature down for us. We examined the giant ash/willow? Tree in St Mathew’s Churchyard, then walked through huge and beautiful golden fields of Barley and onto the isolated church of St Mary’s overlooking Romney Marsh.
The remainder of the walk continued through many fields of Barley, Oats and maybe a bit of wheat. Arrived in Appledore just as the Tearoom was closing. 3 pressed on to catch the 16.57 and the walk poster stopped to have a long drink in The Black Lion in Appledore before walking to the sleepy station for the next train home.
