Heron by Carshalton Ponds

This is a short section of the Mitcham Junction to Colliers Wood walk. It starts at Mitcham Junction and follows the published route through part of Mitcham Common and across Beddington Farmlands - a large area being transformed into a new wetlands nature reserve. The route leads you through the attractive Beddington Park with its historic buildings then on to Carshalton Ponds and Carshalton Village, which offers a choice of post walk refreshment places. The Hope (020 8240 1255) 48 West Street SM5 2PR, a community run pub, has been popular in the past. It serves home cooked one-pot meals (until 10pm) and real ales.

You'll need to print the directions from the L=swc.273 page.

#5 at the station who did the walk and #3 more joined us at the pub. It was #cloudy_and_cooler_than_recent_days. I think this makes a nice evening stroll, espcially the section through Beddington Park, where we came across several trees which have been overtaken by caterpillars or worms. Further along in the park, bell ringing was again in progress at St. May's Church and we saw 3 herons at Carshalton Ponds. The Hope pub wasn't especially busy when we last did this as an evening walk in September 2024, but this time, just before we arrived, there'd been an influx of people. It wasn't quite warm enought to sit in the large outside area but we eventually managed to gather around the same table and service was quick and friendly and people seemed happy with their food and drinks. There wasn't any music but the volume of people talking left us struggling to hear each other .
