Sunday walk Horsley to West Byfleet

T=swc.214

Length  9.6 Miles (15.4 Km) The walk can be shortened by taking a bus from the RHS Wisley bus stop to Guildford or to Kingston(via Esher and Surbiton).

Toughness: 3 out of 10

Trains: 10.00 Portsmouth Harbour train from Waterloo (10.09 Clapham Junction) changing at Surbiton to catch the 10.32 to Horsley, arriving 10.53.

Return trains from West Byfleet to London: xx:10, xx:40 and xx:56 (a slow train).

Buy a day return to Guildford to cover both outward and return journeys.

Green woods and fields, the yellow scrub and heathland of Ockham Common, Wisley Common and RHS Wisley Gardens and a canal side pub on the Wey navigation. A previous posting of this walk suggested it might make a good pre-Christmas outing. There are seasonal festivities at RHS Wisley and some may wish to visit. The public foothpath is outside the perimiter of the gardens. There is an entry charge for non-members.

Lunch: There are two pubs - one early and one late in the walk - and booking is advisable for both: The Black Swan is 3 miles into the walk at Martyr's Green.It should be reached around midday.

The Anchor, at Pyrford Lock is 12.7km (7.8 miles) into the walk. It serves food all afternoon.

The Wisley Cafe is located at the entrance to the gardens and accessible without paying an entry fee, It could be very busy so bring emergency rations in case of lengthy queues.

Tea: If the Anchor is not too busy, it might make a good stop for tea and festive drinks. Otherwise, there are several coffee shops on Station Approach in West Byfleet and there's one at the station.

Walk directions, map and GPS can be found here

n=10 off the train in w=foggy-conditions-lifting-to-dense cloud in the afternoon. We walked through some lovely woods and heathland and lunched on benches around the semaphore. No one stopped at the first pub. One walker had phoned the Anchor to discover it is temporarily closed. We stopped for mulled cider at Wisley. Five got the bus from there, five continued the walk and may report any adventures en route.
The bus toolk a long time to get to Surbiton. Four got trains from there at 4.43/45, one continued to Kingston to continue her journey home by bus.

The notice at the Anchor said closed due to staff isolating, so hopefully will be open next time we pass.

Not much more to report, Wanderer, we had a nice walk along the Wey navigation into West Byfleet where three of us got straight on the train and I'm afraid to say, got to Surbiton before you. Thanks for posting - a nice walk to do in the mist I thought, and less muddy than expected especially across the commons
