Saturday Walk - Milford to Godalming

t=1.20

Length: 18.6km (11.5m)
Toughness: 5 / 10
Transport: Take the 9:45 train from London Waterloo arriving in Milford at 10:38. Return trains from Godalming at xx:10, xx:42 and xx:51

This is a lovely walk in Surrey, partially along the Greensand Way, passing through the Winkworth Arboretum where the Azeleas should be flowering at this time of the year and a pretty village with a cozy pub that also has a large garden, should the weather be accommodating. The final stretches of the walk follow the River Wey Navigation into Godalming where you can find plenty of places for refreshments of all sorts.

What about in Essex somewhere like Brightlingsea, Thorringtom, Hatfield Perival or somewhere like that?

The bridleway by Elm and Leybourne is closed and you can’t squeeze by the barrier at the top!

Other minor updates:
8. There is no longer any barn supported on wooden pillars.
9.The stile has been replaced by a wooden gate.
18. You now pass to the left of a defunct kissing gate.
35. When you fork right off the bridleway, you now go through a metal kissing gate.
46. The sign saying Fiona Adam Steps is missing.
50. There is no longer any sign that a car park was there.
I hope this is helpful. Thank you for the walk.

Mr Tiger counted n=11 but someone - much better at counting - made it n=13 To be fair, one of those joined later, having been trapped in a carriage whose doors didn’t open.
Mr Tiger took an early lead down the narrow path, the others revving their little motors and honking their imaginary horns to get past. After what seemed like an eternity, the path widened and they shot past. “You go on ahead “ he shouted “don’t worry about me” So they did, and they didn’t.
The day was w=mostly-sunny. Two sections of path were closed. The first in the morning, resurfacing work, was easily overcome. Not so the afternoon. Just before Winkworth, the path was barricaded off. Most took to the road (dangerous with fast traffic, no verges and tight curves) to bypass that section. A few, more rebellious in nature, squeezed through and clambered over.
There are one or two places on this walk where it’s easy to take the wrong path. Mr Tiger remembered taking two of them before and managed to top it off with a third.today. (Not lost, you understand, just going the wrong way).
Lunch seemed good in the White Horse. I don’t think many ventured into Hascombe Church to view its spectacular decoration. (Slightly less impressive now the lighting has dimmed).
A nice walk with big trees wild flowers and views but, God, it’s long.
The day was rounded off with a trip to the Star where much strong cider was consumed. Mr Tiger had Double Vision (that’s its name not a complaint)

Mr Tiger, for your relief, the group visited the church after the pub!
