Sunday Walk – Greenwich to Woolwich

Short Walk 42 – Greenwich to Woolwich

Length: 11 km (6.8 miles). Toughness: 1/10

10:26 Thameslink train from Kentish Town (St Pancras 10:32,…, London Bridge 10:48), arriving Greenwich (TfL Zone 2) at 10:57. As there are other ways of getting to Greenwich (DLR, bus, etc), meet at the bottom of the ramp and steps from the rear of Platform 1, as described on page 3 of the walk notes.

Returning from Woolwich there are trains every 7-8 minutes through central London on the Elizabeth line. From the nearby Woolwich Arsenal station (both in Zone 4) there are Thameslink trains at xx:04 & xx:34, plus Southeastern ones to London Bridge and Cannon Street at xx:16 & xx:46. There are also DLR services to Bank every 10 minutes.

The Cutty Sark This walk along an “extremely fascinating stretch” of the Thames had its début on a Sunday in 2020 but since then all but one of its outings have been as evening walks. It's been done in both directions but I'll stick to the one from west to east, as described in the walk document.

Although you'll be able to follow the Thames Path signposts for much of the way, please download the PDF from the L=short.42 page. There's lots of information about the features to be seen en route as well as a comprehensive list of refreshment places and possible drop-out points. Remember that as usual there's no leader for this walk and it's entirely up to you whether you have a break mid-walk or simply carry on to the finish.

Did anyone do this walk? I was free in the afternoon, got the train to Woolwich and walked to North Greenwich, didn’t see anyone but a good 7km afternoon leg stretch. It was #cold-and-cloudy-with-light-rain-later. North Greenwich station was closed so it was a long journey home by a bus and three trains

Four met off the train at Greenwich and one joined us a few minutes later.
Pleasant walking along the Thames with excellent views across the river
We passed the cutty sark, Greenwich college, the thames barrier and the Woolwich ferry where we saw cars diving off. Also got a good view of planes taking off and landing at city airport
We decided to have lunch at the finish so as to avoid the forecasted rain. Two proceeded to the salt micro pub in Woolwich, whilst 3 picnicers had sandwiches outside then joined the other two in the warm, who had ordered delicious pizzas. There was an assortment of ales, Salopian cask bitter and two went for chocolate and orange flavoured stout, delicious but cost £8 a pint.
Four of us then proceeded to wetherspoons near the station for further refreshments before catching the 1650 train back to London Bridge.
An excellent day out, good company, no mud or stiles!!@

Sorry we missed you

I would say that makes N=6 (since one person walking the route backwards in the hope of meeting the group counts as an attendee). I am assuming w=cloudy.
