I'm proposing the short version of this walk going from Ivinghoe Beacon to Bridgewater Monument, omitting Little Gaddesden.
Toughness: 4 out of 10
Length: 12.8km (8 miles).
Those who wish can do the longer circuit 10.1 miles.
Trains: 10.23 from London Euston arriving Tring at 11.02.
Trains back from Tring are at 14.08, 14.43, 15.08, 15.50, 16.10, 16.42, 17.10, 17.50.
Lunch: On the short walk a possible lunch stop is the Monument Cafe by the Bridgewater Monument. Bring a picnic for an earlier stop. Anyone doing the longer walk via Little Gaddesden could book a pub lunch at the Bridgewater Arms, (01442 842 408) located 10.2km (6.3 miles) from the start.
Tea: There's nothing by Tring station, but if having a picnic, the aforementioned Monument Cafe on the Ashridge estate is a popular place for tea. Alternatively, the Greyhound Inn (01442 851228) or the Trooper (01442 949020) in Aldbury village, are possibilities (about 25 minutes from the end).
L= 2.5

n=3 off the train at Tring, two planning to do the longer route incorporating a visit to the pub in Little Gaddesden and one contemplating the shortest route to Berkhamsted. A constructive suggestion was made to do a map led, direct approach to Little Gaddesden, which initially followed the directions for the short route and then navigated the way to LG. All 3 were happy with this plan and passed a peaceful couple of hours on good paths through wintery woods and bordering golf courses and open spaces with nice views. The weather was not as bad as forecast w=damp-but-no-rain-before-lunch-drizzle-light-rain-pm. Two had lunch at the Bridgewater Arms which was fairly quiet, the third joined for a drink. We plotted a short route back to Tring via Aldbury and stopped at the Greyhound pub for coffees which were good. We arrived back in Tring having eschewed the highlights of Ivinghoe Beacon and the Bridgewater Monument but our walk was enjoyable and felt fitting for the day that was in it.
