Saturday Walk - Oxshott to Ashtead

Length: 12.1 miles or 19.5 km (with options to shorten in the instructions). 3 out of 10

"The walk links together several surviving and diverse heaths and commons in metropolitan Surrey. The most scenic section of the walk follows, as the route descends through Winterbottom Wood to take in a section of the River Mole, heading North, then climbs up to the Ledges with views down to the river.

In the afternoon you take a convoluted route around Ashtead Common and Epsom Common, with options for taking a more direct route to Ashtead station."

Late in the walk you have an option to go to Epsom or Ashtead stations.

Trains: Get the 0933 Guildford train from Waterloo (Clapham 0940, Wimbledon 0946,) arriving 1005. Frequent return trains from Ashtead to either Waterloo or Victoria. Buy a day return to Effingham Junction, which is where the two lines meet .
Lunch: The recommended lunch stop is the Star (8 miles/13.1 km into the walk).
Tea: In Ashtead, the Woodman is recommended and in Epsom, the Cricketeers Inn is suggested.

I decided (very spontaneously) to join this walk! I’m taking the 11:10 from Wimbledon so most probably won’t see anyone. But, just for posterity, I am also around :')

A lucky n=13 did this enjoyable walk, in fine weather with the mud better n feared. We inadvertently left one at the station, and she decided we were to fast to catch up, so ended up ( short cut alert) getting to the pub before anyones else. The Mole was high and quite dramatic, on the verge of flooding the river path.
On the long straight approach to the pub, we went on a variation of the original walk, lead by our intrepid guide with old printed instructions.( I later learned that forest works had closed this off,), leading to some gpx discussions.
9 of us ate at the Star, with promt food service. We all opted for the Epson finnish on the grounds it was a better pub. Train drift led to us getting the 1719, whilst loosing some walking to Ashtead to get some extra distance. All in all a good day out, and an enjoyable walk.

Thanks to the walk poster for this choice. Seeing the Mole so high and to navigate through stretches was dramatic. #1 did an extension in Epsom to see the Epsom well learning about the origins of the Spa town. Another place to pass train drift is The Jolly Coopers Pub & Fuzzchat Brewery (microbrewery). This is approximately a mile (0.8) from Epsom station so allow time accordingly.
