Sunday Walk: Whyteleafe to Hayes

16.6km (10.4 miles), difficulty 5 out of 10
A walk in zone 6, surprisingly rural in character, passing through fields, woods quiet valleys, and shady bridleways. The lunchtime pub is said to be a real gem. T=swc.38
Trains: Get the 10:21 from London Bridge, platform 10 (Norwood Junction 10:36, East Croydon 10:40 platform 6) to Upper Warlingham arriving 10:51. (Upper Warlingham is a station in Whyteleafe).
Return trains from Hayes to Victoria at xx14 and xx:44. Both stations are in Zone 6.
Lunch: The White Bear, Fickleshole, ( 01883 779384 ) an attractive oak-timbered 16th century pub. Food served all day.
Tea: There are two pubs near the station,
The Real Ale Way  a micropub - beers and ciders from the cask. Recommended.
The New Inn, a large bar/restaurant, almost opposite Hayes station, open all day and serves tea and coffee as well as the usual range of pub drinks and meals.
Hayes Café, 48 Station Approach, Hayes, is a fairly basic café.. It’s very close to the station but closes early at the weekends.

N=7 and a dog at the station met an n=8 th in the recreation ground and made the brutal climb up to the escarpment. (There were some lesser climbs on the way round, but mostly it was plain sailing). Some sped off and some didn’t, especially yours truly.
4 re-convened in the White Bear, where they seemed to be finickety about the where they were serving food, (some places outside but not others), so no chips for Mr Tiger (frowny face, frowny face).
Onward, onward. A very pleasant walk, just as described. Horses in fields, cows in fields, trees and stuff. Weather was w=cloudy-then-sunny-then-if-you-were-slow_enough-light-rain
For the slower walkers, there was a necessary stop in the Real Ale Way Bar to recover from the rain. A choice between two really strong ciders and a yummy porter, where to begin? (Other drinks were available).
Better mention the flowers - bluebells (not quite out), wood anemones (out), celandine (out) toothwort, violet, wood sorrel. etc. etc out.
