The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game?
The team has the worst track record for penalties in the world, and manager Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the promised land.
Writer James Graham (Punch, Nottingham Playhouse; Sherwood, BBC) updates his epic examination of nation and game to reflect Gareth Southgate’s final chapter as England manager. Rupert Goold (Patriots, Cold War, Almeida Theatre) once again directs this ‘back-of-the-net winner’ (The i).

Dear England:
What an enjoyable evening that was! We had n=17 attended the event, a record number for the club theatre outing. Kerb@TheUnderstudy has upped their game since we were last there, serving authetic street food inside the regular venue and outside food stores. We chatted, chatted, even the 20 mins delay in the start time went in a flash. Can you believe it?.... Three roles were replaced by understudies, yes, three!!... that was the reason for the delay. But the play was no less enjoyable.
The stage set has gone minimalist, must be a tough time at the NT, you know, but they did an excellent job with digital visual, very effective, it is changing time....
We had lively discussions at the interval and at the end, thought will share some of our thoughts with you here.
'Such a good play in so many ways'
'I like all the psychology'
'Love the ending. Greatway of turning losing games into winning insprations',
'Only the English could make a triumphant play about repeatedly not winning'
'But doing better than we had for some years, baby steps, may be next time'
'It is psychological penalty vs physical penalty, but then turning it around to a positive spin so we can all accept!'
'Nice to see psychological therapies making a contribution'
Well, must dash now. Hope everyone enjoying the summer. We will be back at the NT soon....
Love
