Ockley to Warnham with optional extension to Horsham

t=1.47

Length: 16.5km (10.3m) or 20km (12.5m)
Toughness: 3 / 10
Transport: Take the 9:41 from London Victoria arriving in Ockley at 10:51. Return trains from Warnham at xx:19 direct to London or xx:57 via Horsham. Return from Horsham via many fast and slow trains.

This is a lovely walk through the woods of Surrey passing a curious church in the middle of the woods. It usually has a nice display of bluebells during the season. You can extend the walk from Warnham to Horsham via Warnham Local Nature Reserve. On this extension you need to cross the 4 lane A24 which you do at your own risk !

The walk notes give details of two possible extensions to Horsham. They both use a new underpass instead of the previous dangerous road crossing of the A24, so do not risk it.

#15 of us set off from the station, in #warm-sunny weather. Beautiful display of bluebells in Kiln Wood, and also plenty of wood anemonies, stitchwort, celandines and primroses (and bluebells) throughout this walk. The beauty of the flowers was not diminished by the pungent smell of slurry which was being pumped into various containers on tractors to be taken off to farms. We stopped in the church in the woods to admire it’s stained glass windows and the shadowy medieval drawing the wall.
Six of us lunched at the Scarlett Arms (very good food) with two joining us for drinks. We passed a couple using the SWC route, and one walker told them about our website. We continued in hazy sunshine past more woodland flowers until we reached the Sussex Oak where most of us had tea (and one had tea and chocolate cake). A few then left to get the train at Warnham. Three of us then retraced our steps to St Margaret’s Church to walk to Horsham. Unfortunately, the straight, diagonal path across the parkland was closed off and we took the path on the left which was not particularly attractive and a bit close to the main road. When we reached the point where the ‘straight’ path joined ours, we noticed that it was very purposefully blocked. For the future, if people wished to walk to Horsham, they should use the earlier option past Warnham Manor.
A delightful spring walk, and thank you Dirk for posting.
