Length: 4.6 km (2.9 mi)
Ascent/Descent: 43m
Net Walking Time: 1 ¼ hrs
Meet: Walthamstow Central Station (Bus
Station Exit!, check the pdf for directions if confused) at 18.25 hours prompt! (Lloyd Park closes at 19.00 in the winter and we do not want to be
locked in…)
Walthamstow Central (Zone 3) is the easterly
terminus of the Victoria Line (journey time 19 minutes from Oxford
Circus) and a stop on the Chingford branch of the Weaver Lines of the Overground
from Liverpool Street (journey time 15 minutes, i.e. 18.03 train).
The station is linked to Walthamstow Queen's Road station on the Suffragette
Line of the Overground (Gospel Oak to Barking) by a broad footpath, the Ray
Dudley Way.
This short walk through the lively suburban town of
Walthamstow leads along quiet and not-so-quiet streets to the pretty Lloyd
Park with its landscaped gardens, moated island and the famous William
Morris Gallery. After a short circuit through the park, quiet streets are
followed to the small but impressive Walthamstow Village Conservation Area
with its charming cottages, the parish church with stunning memorials in its
churchyard, the Vestry Museum and The Ancient House, London’s
oldest dwelling.
The route back to the station passes numerous pubs, cafés and restaurants along the
renowned Orford Road, as well as brewery
taprooms and the one-of-a-kind
God’s Own Junkyard in a small industrial estate.

This is my manor! I'm sure Thomas is planning to include the incomparable Walthamstow town hall on this walk. Although they are building some new housing around it, they seem to have cleaned it and in the early evening it's floodlit and looking v handsome...
n=10 met on time, but sadly not including The Lady of The Manor, on a w=cold-but-fine evening.
We got the pre-drinks part of the route done in 50 minutes and then visited God's Own Junkyard (a first for most), where some had a bowl of liquid.
On, back to Orford Road, to select a place for a meal, where the group was torn into 2, 1 part going back to The Nag's Head ('s upper floor), a smaller one to The Kitchen.
2 of the non-eaters from the Nag's Head group then joined The Kitchen folk at The Castle, where the rest of us then also headed, so that after a while all 10 were back together again.
The Castle had a 'piano jukebox' thing going (you could ask the piano player to play any of 300 songs), so half of us stayed for a (is this a record?) 22.45 finish.
A well received walk, I'd say.
p.s.: Amongst all that, we had to say farewell to one of ours, who in a few hours will move up to the 'Wee Green Place' (= Glasgow, in English) for a new job opportunity. All the best!
