N=7 attended this event, after a few cancellations. We gathered at the foyer for a brief meet and greet, then 5 went to Silk Road and 2 went to Hew Locke as the latter two have already been to Silk Road previously. Both Exhibitions were interesting. Hew Locke gives very different perspectives of British Colonialism (not from the ruler point of view as we know it but from those being ruled). What strikes me most was that he used his acceptance of the OBE to demonstrate his, probably ours, hypocrisy and questioned if we should return artifacts/treasuries to where they were taken… thought provoking stuff….

I saw Silk Road a while ago, perhaps someone else with more fresh memory could comment on this exhibition.

We then went to All Bar One to share our thoughts with lovely discussions. It was quite noisy in the pub so one left. Six had F&B, food was quite good and price reasonable, but Pad Thai was a bit spicy for one. Nice evening out for all.

I wasn't expecting to be asked to write a review of the exhibition, but fwiw, it was arranged geographically east to west (Japan to Ireland); the scope was so vast it was difficult to take in. I was flagging by the time we got to the Mediterranean and took a short cut to the British Isles. I found it was often difficult to see how the objects related to the theme without doing lots of reading, which was sometimes difficult because the exhibition was so crowded. But there was lots of interesting material, enough to keep us absorbed for an hour and a half, or longer for one who was more diligent and patient than me. Worth a visit and makes you want to know more about the history of the more distant lands featured.
