Evening Walk: Canary Wharf Winter Lights

Evening Walk:  Annual Canary Wharf Winter Lights

Meet: Meet 6:30PM outside the Canary Wharf Jubilee Line (DLR side)

Length: About 2 hours of exploration

Difficulty:  None

It is that time of year again for our annual exploration of the Canary Wharf Winter Lights Festival! This year is the 10th installation and promises to be fabulous with sixteen installations incorporating a Dreamscape theme!

For routing, I would suggest heading West along Eden Dock to Westferry Circus and picking up the installations in numerical order from there. This will bring you in a circle around Canary Wharf back to the Jubilee line. A map of the installations can be found here.

During the festival, there are usually some pop up refreshment venues along the route.  Additionally, there are loads of dining options for post walk libations..... One recommendation would be the Market Halls, an upmarket food court with various types of street food and a full bar -- the Malaysian is particularly good!

Enjoy the festival!

SWC Thursday Subcommittee
Weekday Evening Session
Canary Wharf Winter Lights

N=6

Attendance
Six members were present at the designated station. A seventh, previously tentatively anticipated and historically prone to lateness, was declared absent following confirmation received in due course. During the waiting period one member temporarily removed himself from the group, prompting brief concern regarding quorum. Said member subsequently returned and proceedings continued as planned.

Route and Observations
The group followed the light installations broadly in their published order, moving eastward and westward through Canary Wharf.

At the western end, the following installations were noted as satisfactory to pleasing:

Installation 3 – Lacto-Reacto-Light (constructed from illuminated empty milk containers responding to external movement),

Installation 1 – Out of Body Experience,

Installation 3 – Flower Power (alternatively recorded as Superloop Driver’s Dream).

At the eastern end, installation 10 - The Hula-Hoop generated significant interest and prolonged observation. During this period two members became dazzled by the lights (or the four did and two remained immune) and separated from the group and were not subsequently recovered. A formal search was initiated but sadly recorded as unsuccessful.

Proceeding onward, Installation 12 was observed and broadly approved, though discussion was curtailed by crowd density. Upon completion of the loop, Installation 8 was found to have been disassembled, rendering assessment impossible.

Catering and Related Matters
Four members resolved to take sustenance, with pizza identified as the initial objective, subject to availability and changing circumstances. Alternative arrangements were adopted following the identification of vacant seating in a food hall by your rapporteur.

Food was favourably reviewed overall (one assessment recorded at two stars). Beverages were acceptable. Acoustic conditions were sub-optimal.

Incidental Cultural Activity
While departing, and accompanied by music by Boney M, members engaged in an unscheduled dance episode. This led to an observation that a dedicated SWC Dance Party merits future consideration.

Weather Conditions
The evening remained dry throughout, with no rain or drizzle reported. Temperature decline was noted toward the conclusion of activities.

Conclusion
The event was deemed successful and adjourned without incident.
