16.6km (10.4 miles), difficulty 5 out of 10
A walk in zone 6, surprisingly rural in character, passing through fields, woods quiet valleys, and shady bridleways. One or two climbs but, otherwise, plain sailing.
Trains:
Either the 10:21 East Grinstead train from Victoria (Clapham Jct. 10:28 East Croydon 10:38) arriving Upper Warlingham 10:51
Or the 10:12 Caterham train from London Bridge (East Croydon 10:30) arriving Whyteleafe 10:48.
(The two stations are near each other and directions are given from both. Groups meet near the entrance to Whyteleafe Recreation Ground).
Return trains from Hayes to Charing Cross at xx:11 and xx:41. All stations are in Zone 6.
Lunch: The White Bear, Fickleshole, ( 01883 779384 ) an attractive oak-timbered 16th century pub. Food served all day.

The Real Ale Way a micropub - beers and ciders from the cask. Recommended.
The New Inn, a large bar/restaurant, almost opposite Hayes station, open all day and serves tea and coffee as well as the usual range of pub drinks and meals.

It all started with a challenging climb up ‘Mount Warlingham’ A mere scamper for some, but not for you-know-who, who was trailing for the rest of the morning “sigh”.
But it was a nice walk, even if the paths through Great Park Wood differ scarily from the GPS route. (Don’t panic, you return to it eventually).
The other 11 were caught up with at the White Bear tucking into gargantuan feasts. One so huge, a doggy bag was requested. One drawback, it was, in the immortal words of Slim Dusty, “ A Pub with no Beer”. All the respectable choices were off. Had to make do with cider, didn’t I.
After lunch, we lost some - to trams and prior appointments, that sort of thing.
They told me to gloss over how we went astray on the way into Hayes so I’ll do that. (I blame the person we were following). But we made it and 5 gathered in the Real Ale Way for some strong cider - and free snacks- to finish off this Grand Day Out.
