Rail strikes are planned by RMT for 18 and 20 August, with an underground strike on 19 August, so I suggest you do not linger too long over tea but try to catch an early(ish) train back to Waterloo.
Despite two of the walk's main features having closed in recent years, namely the Lockwood Donkey Sanctuary in the morning, and Sydenhurst - the Ukrainian war veterans home - in the afternoon, today's walk in western Surrey still has lots to offer. In winter the morning's sunken bridleways can be a mud fest but today, assuming the drought continues, these paths are likely to be rock hard. The pleasant morning leg of the walk concludes with a descent from a ridge path to a churchyard which leads into the historic and picturesque village of Chiddingfold, where we stop for lunch at the ancient Crown Inn. Booking ahead is advisable (01428-682255) your e.t.a is 12-30 pm.
After lunch the walk continues first along a quiet lane, passing the former Ukrainian home on your left, then it is over fields and through shaded woodland all the way to Haslemere. The two cafes in town, opposite one another, Darnleys and Hemingways, await your post-walk custom (although see rail strike comment).

#4 met at the station for an enjoyable stroll through Surrey. Weather was a mixed bag, mostly overcast and sticky, with the occasional shower. The walking was pleasant with a mix of lanes, fields and woods. We reached Chiddingfold quite early where we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the churchyard. We took the opportunity to boost our immune systems with delicious blackberries along the route, with one of our party lingering to pick a few to take home. The rest of us reached Haslemere about 2.15 where we stopped at Darnleys for tea and cakes. Whilst we were in the cafe the rain set in and we made a dash for the station to catch the 15.16 back to London.
