Tickets are sold out at the moment, if you still wish to have a seated ticket, I recommend to check for returns as well as for tickets release from owners of seats - they tend to release unwanted tickets 2-4 weeks before the performance.

You can book promming tickets online on the day at 9:30am, limited to 2 tickets per person. I would recommend to get in the queue at 9:30am or just before.

Our 2025 prom season kicked off with a big bang! My oh my, that was fantastic!

N=13 gathered at the steps of Albert Memorial for picnic. A couple of bottles of wine were passed back and forth, owners were eager to offload the content as they would otherwise have to be discarded. NO such a chance at SWC!

The concert started with Les Indes galantes, which had been adapted from the original much longer version to just 24 mins, so we got the best of the best! Everyone was caught by a pleasant surprise when the conductor turned himself into a drummer. Yes, you heard me, a drummer!

Saint-Saens’ Egyptian piano concerto followed. The young pianist, Alexandre Kantorow, was dynamic and mesmerizing in equal measure. He won Gilmore Artist Award in 2024 where he had no idea he had been evaluated by a panel of secret judges in live concerts around the world over the prior 4 yrs! In few places, we were holding our breath to pray for him not to break his fingers! Cheers erupted at the end, he played an encore to feed our hunger…. All agreed, he will go very far in his career and the one to watch!

We had lively discussions at the interval, some enjoyed ice cream and snacks.

Back to the concert hall, a modern piece, Bruckner’s Skull, was played by a less known composer. It reminded me of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring in places. An interesting piece nonetheless. As one walker put it “I normally don’t like the modern piece, but this one I did like”. The spot light was shone on the composer who sat in the audience. He then stood up and received a round of enthusiastic applaud.

Now came to the piece that we were all waiting for, Beethoven Symphony No 5. The orchestra played the piece brilliantly. The conductor was dynamic and his charisma highly infectious. The lady sitting next to me was tapping her fingers on her knee for the entire time….

Sadly, all good things come to an end. This was no exception. No more encore for us today. I was told by a prommer that the orchestra had a late flight to catch….

A thoroughly enjoyable evening, but it also set a high bar for the next two proms. Can they beat it? We shall see. Until next time….
