16.6km (10.3 miles) A longer 12.1 mile walk is possible. Toughness 5 out of 10
Out from historic Pulborough onto gentle hills, with views of the downs. Lunch is in Nutbourne. (A later stop possible in Marehill). Then the route goes along the edge of the RSPB’s Pulborough Brooks, its visitor centre providing further opportunity for lunch /tea. After a stretch along a quiet road, the South Downs loom and a steep climb leads to a ridge walk to Amberley with views of the Arun valley. (This climb can be avoided with a spot of road walking). A longer finish along the River Arun is also possible, this being the 12.1 mile version.
Transport
9:30 from Victoria (Clapham Jct. 9:37, East Croydon 9:51) arriving Pulborough 10:49.
Return from Amberley xx:58. Buy a day return to Amberley.
Lunch
The Rising Sun, Nutbourne (01798 812191), 3.4 miles into the walk, is the recommended lunch pub.
The White Horse, Marehill, (01798 872189), is a possible alternative 0.9 miles further.
The Visitors Centre, Pulborough Brooks, 5.8 miles into the walk, has a self-service tea room, and a fine view over the Wild Brooks. Open 10am to 4.00pm and does light lunches from 12pm to 2.30pm.
Tea
The Riverside Tea Rooms (07765 790 414) by Amberley station. A charming location if you can get there before they close at 4.30.
Details of how to reach The Amberley Village Tea Room (01798 839196) are given towards the end of the directions. However, it closes at 4.
That leaves the Bridge Inn (01798 831 619), also near Amberley station, which is only open till 5 on Sundays. (So best not to miss the 16:58).
There's also the Black Horse, open till 10. The easiest way to find it would be to take the “non climb” road ending. Or…later on, follow the directions for the Village Tea Room and stay on the High Street instead of turning into Church Street. t=swc.9

A select, hardcore n=2 and n=1 dog set off in w=cloudy-humid-weather-later-thundery-rainy Had Mr Tiger checked the forecast, he might have stayed at home hiding under the covers, but it so rarely rains in England these days, why should he? A pleasant walk anyway with wild flowers butterflies and stuff.
We did all 3 lunch stops just for drinkies. And modest drinkies at that. Not a pub crawl, if that’s what you’re thinking. After coffee and cake in the RSPB tea room, the thunder started. Constant it was. And then the heavy rain, while we were doing the tree lined road towards the downs.
We decided to forgo the high level ending and took the side road to Amberley. Not cos we’re wimps or anything, more cos we’re scaredy-cats (though the dog didn’t seem scaredy at all).
En route we noticed the Sportsman is still open. (We didn’t visit) I don’t know if we took the best route from the Black Horse (which we also didn’t visit) but we got to the station by mostly following the main road. Too late for the 16:58. Incidentally, there was a 17:19 but Mr Tiger missed that too, not having realised it existed. So 17:58 it was.
Another grand day out.
