Toughness: 3 out of 10
This short but lovely walk crosses open fields, passing Wanborough Manor and its tiny church. It soon goes over the Hoggs Back (the North Downs ridge) to descend through a vineyard then over a golf course, to pass Watts Gallery, tea room, and Chapel. A little further is The Withies Inn, an excellent country pub. Later, after more woodland, the walk is along the River Wey, followed by tea, or a pint in the ancient town of Godalming.
Trains: 10.30 from London Waterloo, 10.39 Clapham Junction, 11.02 Woking 11.10 Guildford where you change to catch the 11.17 Ascot train to Wanborough arriving 11.23.
Return trains from Godalming to Waterloo run at xx.37 and xx.55.
Buy a return to Wanborough and a single from Godalming to Guildford for the return journey.
Lunch: The cafe at Watts Gallery does hot drinks and light meals. There are picnic tables outside. A little further on, Watts chapel is a scenic picnic spot.
The Withies Inn 01483 421158 is popular with pub lunchers. Best to book in advance if you plan to eat there.
Tea: lots of cafes in Godalming. The Star pub is popular with SWC walkers.

7 off the train in Wanborough were met by a car driver who planned to do a circular from there.. We set off in w=clear-sunny weather. The ground was dry and we decided to risk the potentially muddy path mentioned in para 2 of the directions. This was firm enough to be manageable though it caused one of our number to slip and fall sideways into a bush allowing his phone to fall out of an open pocket. He soon missed the phone and went back to to find it concealed in a tangle of undergrowth and only discovered by ringing it. We carried on and made good in progress over fields, vineyards and golf course. The A31 was very busy and we had to be very patient waiting for gaps to appear between speeding cars whose drivers ignored us apart from venting hostility when we managed to run across. 7 stopped at Watts gallery - five eating in the cafe, two picnicking at an outside table. The cafe was crowded and the picnickers decided to move on to the Withies Inn for a drink. On our way there we met walker number 9 who had walked from Godalming and on reaching the Withies Inn we found another walker sitting outside. He had missed the posted train and walked from Guildford making for a total of n=10 . We had hoped to reconvene with the cafe group at the Withies but on looking in we felt it was too busy and four carried on to Godalming. One walker did manage to get food in the Withies after two of their bookings failed to turn up.
Five visited the Star, two found a very good cafe in the arcade where cafe Mila used to be. Six caught the 15.59 train back to London.
A very pleasant relaxed walk in perfect autumn weather .
