Evening Walk: Guy Fawkes Fireworks in Wimbledon

SWC 206: Wimbledon Common (in the dark) and Park Guy Fawkes Fireworks

Train: Take the 18.09 service from Waterloo, arrives Wimbledon 18.25 . Wimbledon is also served by the District Line. Frequent return trains.

Distance: 5-6 miles/8-10km

This new walk in the evening repertoire had a successful outing during the summer. As the route is conveniently near the Wimbledon Park Bonfire and Fireworks (a ticketed event), I thought we might be able to catch the fireworks display towards the end of the walk -- potentially with a slight diversion.... As there are a number of paths across the common, I also thought we might be able to nip and cut a bit.... For more information and a map of the route can be found here.

Refreshments: Plenty of options in Wimbledon.

n=4 regulars met at the main exit to the Wimbledon train station and took some time to check the other exit for any others before setting off along the alternate route to the Common using quieter roads. It was very atmospheric walking through the light woods in the Common on mostly broad paths which were easy to follow in the darkness. Naturally, we made and corrected some errors. We eventually arrived at an open space on a hill adjacent to Wimbledon Park (where the fireworks were). A few other groups also seemed to congregate here.... On investigation -- none were local and one group from East London had come on the advice of Chat GBT! Eventually some fireworks started a bit to the side of where they were expected -- but were muted, low and far away -- disappointing in a word... then as we were about to leave, about 10-15 minutes late -- a more grand display commenced in the spot anticipated by the walk poster... These were quite good and only slightly obscured by some trees. After the grand finale, we set off back towards the village and give the late hour popped into the first descent looking pub still serving food -- a Youngs -- the food was good, but a bit slow in coming and a bit pricey than the Young's pubs in the less illustrious Southeast side of London! A fun night out in w=dry-slightly-chilly-conditions.
