Difficulty 4/10
A varied north Essex walk through historic Saffron Walden. The town has many interesting features - half timbered buildings, the Fry Gallery (opens at 2), an impressive church, the crumbling remains of a Norman castle, and an ancient turf labyrinth. The afternoon takes you along the Harcamlow Way to Newport.
Trains:
9:57 Cambridge North train from Liverpool Street (Tottenham Hale 10:11), arriving Great Chesterford at 11:05.
Return from Newport at xx:13. Get a return to Great Chesterford
Lunch: Plenty of choice in Saffron Walden. The 8 Bells 01799 522790, adjacent to Bridge End Garden, is recommended but may be pricey. (The gardens themselves would make a nice picnic spot). There's also the Cross Keys Hotel (01799-522207) on the High Street. There are several cafés in and around Market Place, and, on the way out of town, a Wetherspoons, The Temeraire (01799-516975).
Tea: You pass the small 17th C White Horse (01799-540002), about ten minutes before Newport station. Alternatively, detour to the much larger Coach and Horses (01799-540292) to the north of the village.

Mr Tiger, l am at the White Horse. If you happen to pass by. ..
N=5 at the station plus 1 an hour behind makes n=6 A w=mix-of_cloud-and-sun (with a very light touch of rain over lunch).
The morning went well, though by the time Saffron Walden was reached, Mr Tiger was on his own. A message indicated the others had gone to a cafe - The Goat and Grass. Readers, if you weren’t planning to eat, were a little bit thirsty, and already had one foot on Wetherspoons’ doorstep, which would you choose?
After some very nice, very cheap, porter, he sauntered over to meet the others, who were just finishing off their wraps.
There was very light rain over lunch and yours truly had considered using this as an excuse for taking a shorter ending to Audley End station. But, before the excuse could be deployed, the rain, if you could call it rain, had ended. Newport it was. And it was eventually reached, though by then, Mr Tiger was on his own again.
A day of big fields, and big skies.
And in answer to AB : Had airplane mode on and ‘rushed’ past WH to catch train
