Moonlit Evening Walk: Benfleet to Leigh on Sea via Hadleigh Castle (short version)

Evening Moonlit Walk: Hadleigh Castle Country Park (by moonlight) T=Short.14

Train: 17:58 Shoeburyness train from London Fenchurch St. Station (18:03 Limehouse/18:08 West Ham), arriving Benfleet at 18:38 – buy a day return to Leigh-on-Sea

Return: Trains back from Leigh-on-Sea are at: 13, 20, 43 and 50 minutes past the hour

Distance: 3.5 miles or 5.5 km

Difficulty: 1 out of 10

With the full moon on display (including a partial eclipse which should give it a red tint), I thought this walk passing by the ruins of Hadleigh Castle would be particularly atmospheric this evening.....and the forecast looks reasonable (at present)..... It should only take about 1.5 hours to walk to Leigh-on-Sea – so plenty of time to have a meal in one if its many pubs before heading back to London. More information and a map of the route can be found here.

Hello! I'm Amanda, hoping to meet up with this walk at benfleet, if anyone can tell me how to meet walkers at the train station there! I am wearing brown boots and a navy hat & will be wandering around looking lost.

A pleasantly surprising n=8, including 2 newcomers, on this nocturnal adventure. After assembling at the station and taking care of formalities and convenience breaks, we set off on the path along the Thames and were almost immediately greeted by an impressively large rising w=clear--bright-full-moon. We made good progress as the sometimes muddy route was good an solid under foot. Some clouds developed adding atmosphere to the bright moon leading our way. We made the climb up to the castle with impressive moonlit views of the ruins and down to the Thames with the moonlight shimmering on the water. After taking some time to enjoy this view, we set of briskly to reach the Crooked Billet for our 8:30pm booking -- arriving just on time.... All enjoyed a good meal -- better than some in years past -- most then caught the 9:57pm back to London with 2 managing to catch a slightly earlier train. A great night out!
