Possible Wood Anemones in the Weald (Robertsbridge to Battle) t=2.20
Distance: 10.7 Miles or 17.2 km for those more metrically minded
Difficulty: 4 out of 10
Train: Take the 9:45 AM Hastings bound train from London Charing Cross (stopping at London Bridge at 9:54), arriving at Robertsbridge at 11:00. Return trains from Battle are at 07 and 45 minutes past the hour. Buy a day return to Battle.
This walk is touted as “the best wood anemone walk in the Southeast”. Although it is a tad early for the little guys -- some brave front runners may be out..... Also, when posted last year in April..... they had mostly already gone over.... so we shall see.... In addition to these little darlings, the route covers pretty rolling terrain of the High Weald and finishes in historic Battle. You can find more information about the walk and download the walk instructions here.
The recommended lunch spot is the Cross Inn in Staplecross (4 miles or 6 km into the walk) which will mean you can enjoy the main event (the wood anemones) just before Seddlescombe without feeling the need to rush for lunch! A later lunch option would be the more upmarket Queen’s Head in Seddlescombe (7 miles/11.2 km from the start) – but note they only serve food until 3:30PM. Tea and other late afternoon refreshments can be had at various places in Battle.
Enjoy the walk (and the wood anemones)!

The Cross pub is not doing food today
n=14 gathered at the Robertsbridge platform and set off under w=cloudy-skies-clearing-slightly-to partly-sunny--with-a-cold-East-wind. After some discussion on lunch pubs and wood anemones we set off with a plan to stop at the first pub with perhaps an afternoon break at the second.... On arrival, we found the Cross Inn not doing any food because of an impending change of management/ownership.... While most enjoyed a late elevensies at the bar, one of the group called the second pub and secured a booking for the group for a late lunch.... Once finished with our refreshments, we set off again and on reaching the main wood anemone wood -- most made the detour in search of the little guys....many were actually out and in flower, but they stayed rather tightly tucked up to protect themselves from the icy wind.... Perhaps a portable heat lamp should be brought next time..... Most enjoyed a pleasant lunch at the second pub before making the final push into Battle where 5 stopped for drinks or tea or a little of both before heading home with some supplies for the train.... A fun day out in good company!
N=1 turned back to Robertsbridge, having been unable to fathom the route through the field after the orchard. And not for want of trying. It certainly wasn’t through the increasingly dense hawthorn at the far end . Didn’t fancy climbing through the barbed wire fences on either side. In hindsight a closer look along the left hand side may have helped. But the “sod it” moment had been reached.
