Evening Walk: Sculpture in the City

SWC Short 24: Sculpture in the City

Meeting:  6:45PM at the Kindertransport Memorial at street level outside the Liverpool Street exit of Liverpool Street Station. Finish at Leadenhall Market with various transport options nearby.

Distance: 1.7 miles/2.8 km

I believe this is the first outing of the annually updated Sculpture in the City art installation -- many thanks to our SWC art afficionado who regularly updates this always enjoyable evening walk. 2024/25 sees the thirteenth incarnation of this popular attraction, displaying 19 artworks by 15 artists ranging considerably in scale – from large steel- or neon-works to small bronze plaques, thoughtfully placed between iconic architectural landmarks such as the Gherkin (30 St. Mary Axe), the Walkie-Talkie (20 Fenchurch Street), the Lloyd’s-Building (aka the Inside-Out Building, at 12 Leadenhall Street), the Scalpel (Lime Street) and the Cheesegrater (the Leadenhall Building). Wander the City's public spaces and stumble upon world-class public art, on an urban canvas recognised across the globe.

For more information on the exhibition, individual artworks and a map click here.
A printed booklet with a map, photos of – and information on – the art works can be picked up at the City Information Centre, located between St Paul's Cathedral and Millennium Bridge.

For a recommended route, as shown on the map on the ‘OS map’-tab above and on the gpx file, please follow below directions. The route finishes at Leadenhall Market in the heart of the City, with its multitude of refreshment options.  T=short.24

After a 5 minute grace-period wait for late arrivals (not easy in the freezing weather), 8 of us started off, including some SWC stalwarts only very rarely spotted on evening walks. In the next 5 or 10 minutes we were joined by 3 very late arrivals, coming from all kinds of directions, so n=11 in total, in w=cold weather.
The route designer/walk author walked ahead to limit the time spent on studying directions and/or lines on screen, so we got around quite quickly. Some interesting art works are on display this year, I think everyone agreed.
At Leadenhall Market, 4 branched off for a drink, while the other 7 struggled to find a place for food that was within the casual spend limits (the place we have repeatedly gone to over the last few years has closed down). The Pizza Express it was then, downstairs at a quiet table. The Xmas Special cocktails and digestifs were well appreciated...
