West Byfleet to Hampton Court

West Byfleet to Hampton Court

Length: Length: 17.2 km (10.5 miles). Toughness: 1/10

9:54 South Western Railway train from London Waterloo arriving West Byfleet at 10:21. If you miss the train, catch the next one to Byfleet and New Haw, turn right out of the station, and walk along the road for 1km, and join the canal by a road bridge (see map for details).

Buy a return to West Byfleet. This covers all but the short Hampton Court to Surbiton part of your return journey, for which you can use Oyster or contactless if necessary. (Hampton Court is in Zone 6).

Return trains from Hampton Court to London Waterloo are at xx24 and xx54

Wey Navigation at Weybridge If you want a break from overly muddy winter walks this one should do the job as it mostly follows canal towpaths and riverside paths. There are plenty of pubs along the way - too many to list here so take a look at this walk's web page and perhaps call the pub of your choice at the start of the walk. The first possible lunch pub is the Old Crown at Weybridge 01932 842844, with several more at Walton Bridge and beyond. At the end of the walk Hampton Court has several pubs catering for tourists and cafés and tearooms for tea.

For full details and to download your copy of the directions see the L=swc.45 page.

By chance Hampton Court Palace gardens are free this weekend.
Walk updated with 2 recommended new places - a cafe on D'Oyle Carte Island for coffee, and '8 on the river' for tea and cake at Molesey Boat House

The “river level” feature is pretty cool - is it new? I don’t think the walk route will be flooded but the Thames is pretty high around Kingston and it’s possible that some of the towpath from Hampton Court to Kingston will be blocked. You can always walk through the park you want to finish there

I may be a bit late but will aim to join the group at Weybridge.

7 set off from West Byfleet and number #8 intercepted them in Weybridge. There was a bit of drizzle to start but it was mostly #dry-but-damp. The group split up a bit but all eight gathered for lunch and/or drinks at the Old Crown. It wasn't too busy although it filled up a bit later; the food looked hearty.
We investigated D'Oyly Carte Island but those looking for coffee had already had some.
The group got rather separated again in the afternoon but most met again on the way to Hampton Court Bridge where we realised we were too late for the gardens - last entry at 3. After some dithering, we went to a cafe on the street near the station; I think it was called Five at the Bridge. It was quite good. 1654 train.
