Length: Staplehurst to Sissinghurst: 12.6km (7.8 miles), Staplehurst to Cranbrook: 15.2km (9.4 miles). Other options described in the directions.

Trains: Take the 10.01 Dover Priory train from Charing Cross (10.04 Waterloo East, 10.09 London Bridge) arriving Staplehurst 10.59. Return trains from Staplehurst are at xx.18 and xx.48.
Buses run hourly to Staplehurst from Cranbrook (14.51, 15.57, 16.52, 17.50) and Sissinghurst (14.59, 16.05, 17.00, 17.58).

N=9 off the train under w=overcast-skies-intermittently-spitting-rain decided to aim for Sissinghurst before conditions deteriorated. 7 stopped briefly at Frittenden church to consume sandwiches while two forged ahead to explore Sissinghurst castle before the predicted downpours. The 7 picnickers reached the castle as it started to rain and 6 explored the gardens and tower before heading towards the café where the earlier 2 were setting off for Sissinghurst village to catch the 2.59 bus. All decided to join them except one who still had to explore the castle and gardens. The eight caught the bus but narrowly missed the 3.18 train and had to wait for the 3.48. We were all a bit damp at this stage and grateful that the waiting room at Staplehurst station was open. It was raining heavily by the time we departed. I hope our ninth walker made it back without getting soaked. Probably not the best day to visit Sissinghurst. It would be nice to go back on a fine spring or summer day to spend more time in the gardens and admiring the view from the tower.
