I hope walkers won't think this is an unadventurous choice, but with the weather predicted (at time of writing) to be showery, and the two other walks offering far-flung stride-out options, I thought there might be a market for something shorter and closer to home.

This walk also has the advantage that it crosses some nice sections of chalk downland, which should be at their flowery best by now - particularly after the wet July we have just had.

Even though the walk is short, it loops back on itself and so short cuts are possible, if the weather proves inclement. The lunch pub, the Well House Inn in Mugswell, after 5 miles or so, is at the furthest point from the two stations, however.

At the end of the walk your tea stop is the Kingswood Arms right by the station. They do food all afternoon, so puds will probably be available.

Trains back from Kingswood are 09 and 39 past the hour

N=11 set off in the promised light rain, hoping for showers, but no such luck. However a shortcut person secured us a table for 8 and we joined her for a good lunch at the pub, unfazed by our collective dampness.

3 picnicers called in as we were finishing up, who'd benefited from a break in the weather, but didn't want to waste the break from the rain by stopping.

Losing 2 to a short cut home, we set off in the dry, but thunder foretold what was to come. Passing the picnicers, who possibly did the whole thing, 6 of us opted for a longer shortcut half of which was in heavy rain. 2 went for the train and 4 the pub, where 30 minutes turned into an hour. But again nobody seemed to mind that we were very wet!
