N=6 on this walk, including one mum visiting from Hungary. The weather was w=dry-and-fairly-mild.
We started with a balcony view of Villiers Street (simple gold balls - but very effective) and then proceeded via the Strand to Covent Garden (new decorations with big gold bells in the market, a fine Christmas tree, and artificial snow made of soap bubbles).
Thence by some back streets and courtyards (two of the latter very pretty: one complete with bamboo elephant) to Seven Dials (new lights, but not very interesting ones). A long-ish “repositioning” stretch then brought us to Carnaby Street (always creative and colourful: but what are the green and blue frilly patches supposed to be?).
Crossing Regent Street with its now venerable angels (beautiful but due for a change, I would say), we did a brief walk along Oxford Street (still the icicles design) and then went down Bond Street. The decorations changed here two or three years back, and are very elegant, and more and more of the high falutin’ shops are getting into decorations too. Some are striking and some over the top, but it certainly makes for an impressive display.
Some of the party were flagging by now, and thoughts turned to sitting down and “refreshies” in that order. So after a brief look at the Fortnum & Mason windows (not as fun as last year, but at least they still do proper Christmas windows, unlike most shops) we headed east along Piccadilly. Alas, cafes were either crowded or shut or overpriced, so in the end we took refuge in Pizza Hut. Two ate here, two had sides, one had hot chocolate: only one had a glass of wine.
