Length 12.8 km (8 miles), 1/10
Travel: 1005 from
Waterloo (Clapham Junction 1012, Surbiton 1026), to West Byfleet,
arriving 1048. Return trains from Walton every 15 minutes. four
trains an hour are scheduled to run each way on this route, so even
if there are some cancellations, we should get away with it.Get a return to West Byfleet.
A change of plan: as a train drivers' strike has now been announced for Thursday 5, I am reverting to Wednesday and posting this canal and river walk which is pretty weather-proof and seems to be feasible with the strike timetable. The walk directions go to Hampton Court but unfortunately that station is closed so we will have to finish at Walton-on-Thames, following our noses/devices from the Thames to the station (or walk on to Surbiton, another 10km).
Lunch: the Old Crown (01932 842844) on Ship Street in Weybridge, where the canal joins the Thames, looks like the best bet.
Tea: in Walton, the Swan (01932 225964), recommended, has a view of the river. Anyone prepared to walk on to West Mosely, across the river from Hampton Court, will find numerous tea options there.

#8 walkers travelled on virtually empty trains today to this improvised walk in #grey-but-mild weather, with one shower as some of us left the Thames at Walton. It was a pleasant morning strolling along the canal past houseboats and luxurious gardens. Three had a most satisfactory lunch in at the Old Crown, one had a drink there and the others pressed on in search of a better spot for a sandwich. I hear that two of them continued to Hampton Court. But most of us turned right at Walton bridge for a surprisingly long plod to the station - not ideal especially as it started raining, but then the sun came out while we were on the train, so hopefully the Hampton Court walkers had good afternoon weather and made it home from there OK.
