Bank Holiday Weekend: Brecon Trip - Five walks, three of which are new (04 May 2023 (Arrival) to 09 May 2023)

All walks have either short options or will have shorter alternatives posted [i.e. the walk numbers in brackets].
Walks with a lunch pub are scheduled for a day that the pub is open.
The walk needing cars to get to it is scheduled for the Saturday when all possible car drivers ought to be there. Alternative walks for walkers without car or driver will be posted [i.e. the walk numbers in brackets].
The Tuesday walk has been put on the website by our webmaster as a bit of a joke (I think), but it makes good sense as a departure day walk for this trip, as it’s an out-and-back so one can walk as much or as little of the walk as one wants, and – when in Brecon - one should go up the Beacons Range at some point surely…

Draft Walk Schedule:
05/05/23 (Fri) SWC 401 - Storey Arms to Libanus via Ystradfellte [Alternative: SWC 306]; 30.0 km; 10/10
06/05/23 (Sat) SWC 400 - Waterfall Country [Alternatives: SWC 280 (Waterfall + Bluebells) or SWC 306]; 22.4 km; 7/10
07/05/23 (Sun) SWC 279 - The Black Mountain; 21.9 km; 8/10
08/05/23 (BH Mon) SWC 307 - Fforest Fawr Traverse [Alternative: SWC 280 (Waterfall + Bluebells)]; 21.4 km; 8/10
09/05/23 (Tue) SWC 285 - The Fan Dance; 21.8 km; 8/10

Which village / town is suggested as the most convenient place to stay please ? Particularly for non drivers.

Brecon. All walks will start with buses or cars from Brecon.
Get to Brecon by bus from Abergavenny Station (bus stop is at bottom of Station Road in A'gavenny). Lines 43/X43, last bus late afternoon/early evening.

For a first timer the basic gist is that we book our own travel and accommodation, right? Are there are group buys or recommended bnbs, etc?

Yes, indeed, Matthew.
The 'big' hotels are the Wellington, the Markets Tavern and the George. The Castle will be closed for refurb. Guest Houses and B&B's are aplenty. Walking distance to the bus station is recommended (which is 50m from the Markets Tavern).
To get to Brecon: bus from Abergavenny (43/X43). Make sure you get to Abergavenny in good time for the last bus, which leaves from the bottom of Station Road. Train tickets to A'gavenny: split tickets London - Newport and Newport - A'gavenny can work out cheaper than through tix. Tix available from 12 weeks before the trip, cheap Advance tickets to Newport may go on sale a little later only though. Newport - A'gavenny tix are always the same price, no deals or Advance tickets ever. So, any savings through Advance tix are on the London - Newport leg.

Great - I’ll look into this. Thanks for the info, Thomas!

Thomas, if we travel by car to the start of each walk, will there be public transport available to get back to the car at the end of each walk? Also, is the start of the walk posted as 10:42? Would be great to have your number just to make sure we don't miss the group.

Hi. That, like everything else, should become clear from the walk posts, up next week.

individual walks now posted.
schedule as previously drafted, for the reasonings outlined in this post. on saturday, the hope is that enough people are glued to the TV screens to watch some pageantry event in London so that the popular parts of the route are less crowded than they can be. on BH Monday, the buses seem to run to the weekday schedule, giving us more flexibility than feared at the end of the traverse.
note to drivers: the waterfall walk on sunday relies on drivers taking as many as possible passengers to the walk (and back!). So, any driver please come to the meeting point as described; do NOT drive to Pontneddfechan with an half-empty car.

fitting alternative walks for the days where they are needed or useful are listed in the posts.

Hi,
My blisters from Sunday are healing nicely so I’m interested in joining holiday walks from Saturday.
I’ve got two questions:
1. I heard from one of the walkers that a female walker wanted to sell her reservation for accommodation so I am interested to hear from her on 07910345219.
2. Will the start times / points for each walk be announced on this chat??
Thank you 😊 Kasia

Hi Kasia.

Her email is shown in the blue box at the top of This Week's Walks, it is: goepfertkarenATyahooDOTcom

The walks have individual posts already (scroll down This Week's Walks), which should have all the necessary details. But please ask if anything is unclear.
