Wednesday Walk - Hever to Leigh

T=1.19 L=1.19
By special request of a veteran walker

LENGTH 8.9 miles

TOUGHNESS 2/10

TRAIN London Bridge 10.07 calling at East Croydon 10.22, reaching Hever 10.49
Return trains from Leigh are at 15.28 , 15.59 and 16.56 to Charing Cross
15.58 to Victoria

LUNCH The suggested lunch pub, the Castle Inn which had not long reopened has had to temporarily close again due to essential structural works being carried out by its landlord, the National Trust, which owns the entire village. However the excellent Tulip Tree  tearoom remains open, or you could march on to to Penshurst’s Leicester Arms Hotel

TEA. Nothing as the pub in Leigh doesn’t open until 5pm

Another tea option would be the Porcupine Pantry at Penshurst Place or you could carry on to Tonbridge where there is a choice of pubs and cafes.

The walk notes say buy a day return to Leigh (Kent) any routes permitted.

#18 were enticed out for this walk by the #sunny-mild weather. It was quite muddy in places but we made good progress arriving at Chiddingstone shortly after noon, where several walkers decided to stop for elevenses at the Tulip Tree. Everyone else carried on and I believe most had a picnic lunch in the churchyard at Penshurst. Several caught the 15.26 from Leigh, and I understand others carried on to Tonbridge. It was a lovely day out with a whiff of spring in the air, plenty of birdsong and the first shoots of wild garlic in evidence.

Six carried on to Tonbridge and then went to Wetherspoons for beer so cheap it was ridiculous (I had a half for 90p…) We got a train circa 5pm.

Birdsong on this was indeed varied. Apart from the usual great tits, blue tits and robins, I heard four mistle thrushes (my first of the year), the same number of song thrushes, one green woodpecker, a brief flurry from a nuthatch, several dunnocks, a gaggle of cheeping sparrows,, a stock dove and a collared dove. The sap is definitely rising!
