A Welcome Back Walk in the High Weald: Robertsbridge Circular or on to Battle

SWC Walk 222: Robertsbridge Circular with SWC 30 for a longer route to Battle

Distance:  A few options to suit various appetites:

Main route: Robertsbridge Circular: 11.4 miles (18.3 km for those more metrically minded)

Battle endings:  Shorter option via Netherfield 12.2 miles (or 19.7 km for those metrically minded)

Longer option via Catsfield (but not Brown Bread) 15.8 miles (or 25.5 km).

Difficulty:  4 out of 10

Train:  Take the 9:00 AM Southeastern Hastings bound train from London Charing Cross (9:02 Waterloo East; 9:09 London Bridge; 9:41 Orpington) to Robertsbridge, arriving 10:34.  Return trains from Battle are at XX:07 and XX:37 and from Robertsbridge XX:14 and XX:44, until the 19:07 when they become hourly.  Buy a day return to Robertsbridge or, if planning to finish in Battle, Battle.  Not very helpfully, the national rail planner says the weekend schedule may change….so please check back on Friday to confirm train time……

The introduction of this walk begins “a shortcoming of this walk is there is no lunch stop.” So, what better time to give it one of its rare outings – when pubs are closed! The route begins through territory familiar from another SWC walk – but then heads into rarely visited “Mad Jack” Fuller territory via Brightling, including an interesting tower and mausoleum.

For those wanting a longer walk, slightly over halfway through the main walk (near Cackle Street), it is possible to follow the interconnector instructions and join up with SWC 30 Battle Circular (near Netherfield). From here, you can either follow the Battle Circular route as written via Netherfield or for a longer route to Battle follow the Battle Circular route in reverse via Catsfield. You can find more information about the walk and download the walk instructions here (SWC 222) and here (SWC 30).

Although tea shops and pubs are closed, both Robertsbridge and Battle have shops to buy post walk refreshies….Some tea shops in Battle may offer a take away service.

It is expected to walk in groups of six and provide contact details. To facilitate the collection of contact details, please pre-register for this walk on the "events" page at https://www.lwug.co.uk/. You will need to first sign-on and possibly register if you have not previously registered on the site.

If you test positive for COVID within a week of attending this walk, please contact me by emailing covid@lwug.co.uk.

Enjoy the walk!

Wanderer wants an email before we turn up on a walk. Do all schedulers require the same? If so, absolutely fine. Thank you very much.

It is fair to say the walk posters are experimenting with the best approach to tackle collecting track and trace details.....I am still considering the options and will likely add an email or other pre-registration link to the post in the next day or so....

n=15 on this first post lockdown day walk. I am pleased to report most had pre-registered, making the contact tracing detail gathering process run more smoothly...Although efforts were made to depart in smaller groups -- we got a bit muddled following the first few instructions -- however, the group did then quickly disperse into 4 separate parties for the day (it helped that some of us went rather wrong early on) -- one group did the Robertsbridge circular, two groups did the shorter route to Battle separately and one group explored another route to Battle that follows the main route along the reservoir before heading south. We enjoyed it very much and would recommend it as an option to the walk.

It was a great day out and fun to see everyone, including those very briefly at the station....even if the weather was w=a-bit-damp-with-persistent-light-rain-for-several-hours.
