Wednesday walk - Wanborough to Godalming

Length: 12.8km (8 miles).

Difficulty: 3 out of 10

This short but lovely walk crosses open fields, passing Wanborough Manor and its tiny church. It soon goes over the Hoggs Back (the North Downs ridge) to descend through a vineyard then over a golf course, to pass Watts Gallery, tea room, and Chapel. The Chapel (free) is worth the slight detour. A little further is The Withies Inn, an excellent country pub. Later, after more woodland, the walk is along the River Wey, followed by tea, or a pint in the ancient town of Godalming.

For those wanting a longer walk.there is an option to continue from  Godalming along the tow path of the River Wey all the way to Guildford. This adds 4 miles to the walk.

Trains: Take the 10am Portsmouth Harbour train from London Waterloo to Guildford arriving 10.32. From there, take the 10.53 Farnham train to Wanborough, arriving 10.59.

If travelling from Clapham Junction, take the 9.52 Haslemere train to Guildford to connect with the Wanborough train.

On the return journeyYou will need to buy a single from Godalming to Guildford..

Return trains from Godalming xx.04 and xx.34.

Lunch: The Withies Inn (tel. 01483 421158) in the village of Compton is usually popular with pub lunchers.

The Watts Gallery cafe serves light meals and sandwiches. There are picnic tables outside which can be used by those who bring their own food.

Tea: Cafe Mila and other options are detailed in the walk directions. Various pubs are  also mentioned.

Against my better judgement I set out for Waterloo but was foiled by the Northern line and won't get there in time for the train. If anyone does the walk please leave a comment.

Set out thinking people were ahead, but footprints petered out, so realised I was alone. Now at Withies, 12:45pm.

Just 3 met at Wanborough station. We thought there might be another walker ahead of us as we saw footprints in the snow on the route. Sure enough, we encountered a walker at the lunch pub so #4 in total. There was a fair bit of #snowfall_at_the_start_which_turned_into_rain_later. The Withies Inn was a welcome sight and surprisingly busy for a snowy Wednesday. After a warming lunch we set off for Godalming and, fortunately, the rain had eased off. Although we were cold and damp at the end, we all enjoyed this pleasant walk.
