Saturday Walk: Berkhamsted Circular

9.5 miles / 15.3 km

This walk visits a different side of Berkhamsted to other walks in the area - after a stretch along the canal it heads off to Ashley Green to lunch and explores Hockeridge Woods in the afternoon.

Trains:  10:09 from London Euston, arrives at Berkhamsted at 10:46.  There are 4 trains per hour for the return journey.

LunchThe Golden Eagle, Ashley Green, (01442 461 651), food served til 2:30pm.

Berkhamsted has plenty of options for refreshments in the High Street or along the canal.  The station also has a great shop that sells hot drinks and beer/wine.

If it's too muddy near Sale's Farm, there was a lane running parallel to the field slightly further on.

Margaret's memory is spot on, it was saturated in late '23 but easily avoided by returning to the minor road (see para 2/3), or you could be dangling precariously from barbed wire fences. The Golden Eagle menu under new management was threadbare too, but looking at the website it may have improved!

I was one of those who went to The Rising Sun at the end of Wednesday's walk and can recommend it. It's a community pub with a friendly atmosphere and people liked the choice of local ales.

N=4 at the station. Weather was w=cloudy
You may ask “what was a registered canalophobe doing on the walk?” Mr Tiger wondered this too, but kept his grumbles to himself. But we saw some swans and it wasn’t all that bad. Eventually the canal section was over. One of the 4 parted company at bridge 146, having decided to walk on to Hemel. That left n=3
There were muddy stretches on the rest of the walk but nothing insurmountable. And Mr Tiger’s cheery banter and clever jokes kept spirits high. The ‘very muddy’ section near Sales Farm was avoided by taking a not-quite-as-muddy lower path. Clever, eh?
There was a picnic stop at Ashley Green, then a visit to the Golden Eagle, where alcohol was consumed. Friendly enough.
Then on, through Hockeridge Woods. Later Berkhamsted was reached. A stop at the Mad Squirrel ensued, where 2 had porter and 1 had something that rhymed. One headed for the station, 2 went shopping.
Consensus was an enjoyable walk with good views. If only the unpleasant road section near the end could be airbrushed out.
