Sunday Second Walk - Gainsborough country and the Stour Valley

Book 1 Walk 8 Bures to Sudbury
Length: 16km (9.9 miles). Toughness: 4/10 (less for shorter versions)

10:02 Ipswich train from Liverpool Street, changing at Marks Tey (arr 11:06, dep 11:15) arriving at Bures at 11:27.

Return trains from Sudbury to Liverpool Street changing at Marks Tey are at xx:42 (journey time 1 hour 32 minutes).

An easy walk through Gainsborough country in Suffolk, much of it along the Stour Valley Way, leading to the historic market town of Sudbury, which is approached across ancient water meadows.

The recommended lunch pub is Bulmer Fox (01787 312277) in Bulmer Tye after 10km. Walkers who are not enamoured of this pub, located on a main road with nowhere nearby for picnickers to settle themselves, might prefer to divert at Great Henny to the Henny Swan pub (01787-269238) in a lovely riverside setting at Henny Street.

Tea can be taken in the Mill Hotel, a converted millhouse overlooking the meadows in Sudbury.

Further information and the walk directions can be found on the TOCW1 Walk 8 page.

N=6 for this Suffolk walk. W=warm-humid-cloudy-with-occasional-light-rain Beautiful walk through lush green undulating countryside – a bit too lush at times - some stretches were overgrown and wet with the rain. My technique worked quite well. Hang back a bit and let the others do the trampling. The Henny Swan seemed to please. Later the Millhouse did likewise but, apparently, their scones have shrunk. The buttercups on Sudbury Meadows were a little understated this year probably taking a rest after last year’s spectacular showing. A little egret was pecking about on the stream within sight of my scone-scoffing chums. As we stepped on the train, the sun came out :(

Indeed, the finish is in Suffolk, but the start and 90+% of the route are across the Stour in Essex, incl. Bures Station itself. Check the map, dear Anonymous...

My feet may have been in Essex but I was breathing Suffolk air..... 99% Suffolk air anyway. :(
